Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our family is planning on taking our annual trip to the beach once again, only this time, I'm determined to be a bit more organized and inspire my children to fascinate upon what the seashore has to offer.

With more opportunities this summer for beach combing (in addition to our already pre-planned vacation), I'm in the midst of gathering and collecting ideas for study.

Keeping in mind that my kids are 5, 3, and 1, can we share some ideas for nature study that centers around the seashore?

Tell me *all* about :: Picture books, crafts and activities, making stetches in a journal, books for sea-life identification of plants and such, anything to help me put together a fun little "things we can do" list.

I don't want to be formal about this so I'm not interested in purchasing a pre-packaged "unit-study", but any thoughts and ideas you can share would be so wonderful!

Here's a site that I've barely browsed, and happened upon it while doing some general "Googling" : Nature Study at the Beach

And I did also find a past thread about the Seashore which I'll be exploring as well.

I just thought I'd toss the Seashore out there again and see if anyone has anything else to add!

Thanks so much!

I'll add these threads:

::Jim Arnosky
::Ocean Life Picture Books and Other Resources
::Ocean Book List
::Unschooling at the Beach

Which some threads of course have duplicate ideas and suggestions. What was big for us was just sand, shells, and seabird studies for us for the younger age.

I'd say most important is a shell guide and a bird guide in particular for the area you are going (we bought a shell guide that had all over the world, and it wasn't that helpful). You might have better luck buying something at the actual place.

Arnosky's and the One Square Foot Seashore are also the vital books I'd suggest for the kids.

And collecting shells and saving them for sorting and later crafts as gifts was great fun. We made picture frames.

Sandcast Candles

Discovery Bottles

Seashells are a symbol of baptism, and also of pilgrims. St. James the Greater, June 25, also has that symbol connected with him (mostly scallop shells).

Baptism of the Lord ideas, and Nautical Advent Wreath

I'm assuming Washington coast here - if so, there are many lighthouses which could be part of the study - though not exactly seashore nature study, but fun none-the-less.

Some older threads on lighthouses:
Lighthouses - Beacons of Light
beautiful, beautiful story (Lighthouse picture books)
Lightship (we visited the one in Astoria, OR two years ago. There is also one in Seattle, I think.)

As I was putting my book away, I realized I should recommend The Amateur Naturalist by Gerald Durrell. This covers various coastal areas that can give you ideas for nature study at the beach. Kris did a quick review, and MacBeth was the first one to recommend this book. The photographs are rich and amazing. It's OOP, but readily available.

Sounds like fun, Chris. How about some Dover Seashor books,
Peterson Field Guides for Young Naturalists - Seashores or seabirds,
One Small Square - Seashore, and
Have You Ever Heard a Catfish Purr?: Fish Scales and Tales from God's Underwater World.

Love,
