While driving my dd around awhile ago I was thinking of posting a flip-flop thread (see how my mind works on the road  ) because of something that just happened this past Sunday at church. THen I get home to find Elizabeth wrote at the modesty thread:

So here's the thread and here's what happened.
As we stood up to go to communion this Sunday, I was lifting the kneeler and looked down directly into my 8 yr old's feet. She had on some blue rubber flip-flops. Yes, MacBeth, the very kind my mother would have worn had she ever worn flip-flops.
"What are you doing with flip-flops on your feet?" I hissed.
"I couldn't find anything else," she calmly blinked into my eyes.
"But to church! Chels, you know better..."
Not perturbed in the slightly, she blinked again. "But you're wearing them."
"I am not. I have on pretty sandals...with a flower on them. There's a difference, honey. You look like you've just been walking on the beach."
And off we went to communion.
Once Mass was over we were visiting outside and a friend I graduated with came over to us, swatting Chels on the head with his bulletin and saying how big she was getting. I shared with him about the flip-flop issue. He and his wife laughed and he told Chels, "Well, sure. Just pluck a flower as you walk in the church and tie it around your flipper there. Yours will look as pretty as Momma's."
Gee, they were a lot of help.

Now I'll wait for Mary Chris to share her flip-flop craft.  You know...something constructive and decent. 
One summer my oldest dd spent a lot of time making her own. She'd buy the plain rubber ones at the hobby store for $1/ $2 and wrap thread around the strap and add beads and such. Is that similar, Mary Chris?
They do have the cutest styles now. Even some that have heels and are worn as dress shoes.

I saw a little girl at the ballpark yesterday who had a flip-flop business of her own. She buys them at Dollar Tree, ties about two dozen unblown balloons all along the straps and sells them from a table in front of her house. They were really cute for a little girl to wear, partyish if you will.

I used to call them that...that's the first name that comes to my head. But since that conjures other pictures, I restrain myself.
I can't accept the flip-flops as proper foot wear for public. My dh works in DC and sees so many women wearing these to work. I think casual and pool and beach settings perfect. But work and Mass? No.
I know there are nicer and prettier ones, but it seems they are worn everywhere without thought as to what is appropriate. And the flatter they are, the more it looks like bare feet. And some women don't know how to walk in them, so there are a lot of penguins walking around.
My main beef? The slapping noise they make....
I don't wear flip-flops because of foot problems. I do wear slides that slap when I walk. I get so embarrassed.
Maybe I wouldn't sound as harsh if I could slip into a cute pair of flip-flops!

I was going to write and give our sailing perspective on flip-flops; no leather, no linings, must float and here I find a shoe craft that could double as a PFD (Personal Floatation Device)! Check out the Grand Prize Winner's design in the recent BoatUS contest. Slender, cylindrical air bladders inflate with CO2 from a belt to surround the wearer much like an inner tube.
{air bladders = balloons} + {belt = flip-flop} = me floating like Achilles!

We called them thongs, too, but my sister is emphasizing that we change that to flip-flops, since it has more meaning, now.
I wear them all the time, but they are leather and not just the "V" look. Mine are all kinds of twisty, fancy leather, with a slight heel on some of them. Anyway, I can't wear them to Mass anymore because they "click" too loud.

At my dd's bday the girls decorated flip flops. I bought some cheap flip flops at WalMart and some inexpensive fabric there also. I then cut the fabric into four inch by inch strips, I think, and the girls just tied them on. I am pretty sure I found the idea in a Family Fun magazine. Later I will poke around the website and see if I can find a link.

I feel the same way. Coming from a tropical island where people do not wear flip flops except at the beach or pool, I can't seem to get into the flip -flop fashion. My 12 dd loves them. Thankfully she knows better than wearing them to mass.

I guess that is why they are called flip-flops. To me that is what they sound like: flip-flop, flip flop. Sometimes at mass, after communion all you can hear is the flapping noise of feet as women go back to their pews.

I tell you what, down here you might have to go barefoot or wear winter shoes! I have been looking for a pair of sandals for the last two weeks and have gone into half the shoe stores in this town -- nothing but flip flops! I own two pairs of flip flops, and had been wearing them to Mass because I busted my toe and couldn't get anything else on my left foot. They aren't the nicest flip flops, though (no better than Chels' for sure! ), and I was looking for a nicer pair of summer sandals to wear to Mass. Well, down here, you either cover your whole foot with a sneaker, or you accept that only the front half will be covered. Still haven't bought a pair of summer shoes, but am thinking that a pair with a wide fabric front (and no back) will work to wear with skirts to Mass. The toe's still not up to par. I am wearing a closed shoe now, but have to hobble as I walk.

I have a black, hard rubber bottomed pair of slides that slap. They are old, cracked and getting looser all the time. A few weeks ago I slipped them on before Sunday Mass to run out in the yard (that's what I use them for) and--(if you're 45 or older you know what's coming don't you )--as we rolled into the parking lot at church I realized I still had them on. Then, as Mary M can tell you, I wore them by accident to the Ascension walk up 300 or so steps at Mother Cabrini Shrine .
I think I need some cute new flip-flops.

Well, I'm still a few years short of 45, but I have a similar story, Gwen. I don't like walking around the house barefoot or in socks, so I wear slippers here at home all the time. I bought a pair of those terry-cloth covered flip-flop slippers for the hot weather and love them. The only problem is that they feel so much like sandals that it's a little too easy to forget that they are slippers!
I was running a bit late for Mass this past Holy Thursday evening . . . we jumped into the van and hurried through the neighborhood on our way. I must have been almost a half-mile from home before I realized that I was wearing my slippers! We turned around and I switched shoes as fast as I could. We were late, but not horribly so. Boy was I embarrassed at the thought of walking into Mass with those on! For weeks my girls teased me as we were going out the door by asking if I had my shoes on.
And the sad thing is that there have been a few more instances in which I've actually been on my way to the van -- about 5 or 10 steps outside my door -- only to find I had those slippers on. I blame my pregnancy brain.

Oh boy, I'll never forget last year when one of the mom's at our parish school Mass loudly flip-flopped into her pew and Fr. asked her to leave the Church because she was a distraction!! Boy, did she give him an earful afterwards.  But no one has walked in loudly since then. :)

Well, flip flops would be a whole lot less noticeable than slippers, which is what I wore to Mass one Sunday by mistake. What's worse Irene, is that I wasn't pregnant and these were big fluffy boots and no I didn't have time to spare
Personally I can't stand any shoes without a strap on them. I always feel like they are going to come off.

You can bet that for a long time after this happened everyone including myself checked my feet as we left the house.
I was reminiscing with dh about this last night, what did I do when I got to the church? I remembered he wouldn't let me go home and change I did slink in the back and sit down there, but when I was going to forgo Communion for pride's sake he made me go. Good for the soul's sake and was a humbling experience.
I can laugh now along with you.

Thank you ladies, i needed a good laugh. We have also come upon this issue. During Mass one day last week, I looked down and saw that dd 6 had on her flip flops, I know I had told her just the week before no flip flops at Mass. We promptly went out a bought a nice pair of sandals with straps she can wear to Mass. On Sunday, we were getting into the car to go to swim lessons and I noticed she had on her new pretty sandals. At least she like them.

I was at a mass a few weeks back and the altar servers both had on flip-flops! Now THAT was noticable. I think the flip-flop fasion is getting out of hand. They are nice, comfortable, and can be pretty, but they ARE NOT dress-up or mass attire. I can't believe Father let them serve. I'm sure there were more appropriately dressed servers present in the pews.
