Ok, I think I am going to break down and create a blog for our family.
I know there are quite a few places to create one for free.
Any advice on how to go about this?

Sylvia,
I asked that same question away back when here.
Willa helped me to decide by showing me hers........and she said since I will post a lot of photos, I might find it easier with blogger.
So far, it is almost two years...........I like it just fine. Some wish I would post there more often.
Maybe next year......

Just wanted to chime in with another blogger vote! :)
I started off with homeschool blogger...moved to Word Press...ended up at blogspot/blogger (same thing.)
Blogger is the MOST user friendly of the 3. Now, I blog a LOT and it has become a hobby for me...so I really needed something easy. I didn't like everything I had to do to change one little thing on my sidebar with homeschool blogger and word press. Basically it meant me learning alot of HTML, which I am NOT interested in! I love blogging but learnig HTML is not something I want to learn or am even interested in. I wanted a site that did all that for me! And with blogger you can add things to your sidebar, change your background, change the color of your words/posts...VERY easily...that's what I like!

I think I am going to go for it!!
Now I am really going to show my ignorance. What is the difference between a blog at blogger and using either Facebook or MySpace (neither of which I have every really looked at)

I have both a Wordpress blog and a Blogger blog. I find Blogger to be much more user-friendly. It also allows for some features that aren't allowed at Wordpress.
Martha
PS - I TOTALLY agree with Candance about not wanting to deal with HTML! Blah!

Sylvia -- I've been using blogger for a few years now and it just keeps getting better (and still free). I have five (!) different blogs ... one for our family and homeschool adventure, one for my knitting designs and knitting-oriented comments, one for my knitting book, one for my soon-to-be-published creativity book, and one private diary blog for exactly what each of my kids is doing and what we've done.
I really like blogger because anyone can view it or I can limit who views it. When we were doing a co-op/craft club, I just had access for the members and their families to be able to view it, edit, add, etc. I like blogger too because it's so easy to get up and running and than be able to learn stuff to tweak it as you go. My family/homeschool blog is a great way for family to see what we're doing, etc.
Myspace and Facebook -- you can only see it if you're a member. I don't do anything on those (altho I did sign up for Facebook, I just didn't ever do anything with it).

Ok, I've been looking around on blogger.
It looks like anyone who wants to read it has to set up a google account? Is this correct?

I think that this depends on how you set it. I think that you can require that people who comment on your blog are officially signed in, but you don't have to, which would allow anonymous commenters or just other people who don't have google accounts. I would definitely enable the word verification thingy, though, or you will get comment spam!

When someone "follows" a blog what does that do? Does it send them an email when you update?

You know, I do not do the word verification thing.......because I find it annoying myself ........I thought I would try without.....to make it easier, and in the almost two years.........I had only ONE SPAM comment.........and that was in the first month or so
Of course......now that I have said that.........let the SPAMMNG begin ......Murphy's Law, right?

It seems to come in waves for me - I went for a long time with no spam, then got hit on multiple posts by the same spammer, then nothing, then got hit again. I'd had no problems since enabling the word verification until a few days ago when someone got through. Their name was "s*xy" so whatever the spam said was probably scandalous, but it was all in Chinese characters, so I couldn't read it. Anyway, if they really want to get through, I guess nothing will stop them, but the word verification did cause a noticeable decrease for me.

No, that's not correct. It all depends on how you set up your preferences when you customize it. You can decide who can view your blog and also who can comment. You can leave both options totally open for anyone or you can impose some limits.

No, not unless you've added a gadget in your sidebar that allows them to "subscribe" to your blog. Otherwise, they read your blog by typing in your URL or clicking on your name in their bookmarks if they have bookmarked you.
However, you can add a "feed" gadget in Blogger that will allows folks to subscribe and therefore be notified by email whenever you post something new.
