Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have seen a lot of discussion of strategies for using and limiting electronic devices regarding screen time concerns and the like. But do you have any rules for the purposes of protecting the devices themselves? Have you had something get broken from carelessness? What did you do?

Rule for ipad/kindle: I ask for the same respect that our books are treated with: things are not to be thrown or carelessly tossed around, should never be on the floor, and when not in use are in a book basket or bedside.

Having said that, I could see very quickly that our ipad was getting a lot of use, and even when the little kids were careful, they just aren't that...."naturally graceful." Which is why I enshrouded the ipad in a gumdrop case. It's been dropped, fallen off the couch and table - and is doing fine with no screen cracking. I don't like how clunky it makes it feel, but that was an aesthetic I was willing to sacrifice for protection. Since we use it with a bluetooth keyboard which I , I didn't need to worry about physical access to the ipad for keyboard connection.

So, I guess we have a two-fold approach - hermetically seal in rubber , and ask for the same respect a book receives.

So far we haven't had any problems. My kids bought their own devices so perhaps that makes them try to be more careful since they know it's their money. I mentioned buying protection plans and they didn't want to spend the money on it. I do require a case if they leave the house. I also restrict taking them to places I think other kids would not be respectful. They aren't allowed to take them to scouting events.

ETA: my boys do have a problem of always leaving them on the floor. I'm sure this is how they will go! I try to catch and remind them every time because I'm afraid I'm going to step on it and break it and then feel guilty and want to replace it . . . . or it would be my nook!

For my 10 yr old - don't walk with the iPad. Hold is well, Keep it on your lap or a table. Don't use it while your eating or drinking. Don't play with it on the floor. When done put it on the coffee table or in the drawer of the coffee table - in other words don't leave it on the floor or on the couch or chair. THen I do remind him why we are careful - because the thing is expensive AND if its broken we most likely will not replace it. Therefor I also only let him take it out of the house if I am with him (for example we both are waiting for dd wisdom teeth pull!).

Gumdrop is hopefully going to be releasing a new case with a hideaway stand. A few are available for presale and/or funding here and for the iPad 5 (it might work on previous models of the iPad too) here.

I agree with Jen that the Gumdrop case does a great job protecting the iPad.

My experience is the plain jane touch kindle is a tough little machine. Mine is still working and it slid down inside the recliner and got caught in the mechanism and it has a scrap and a point of about 3-4 letters worth that won't show.. and otherwise still works just fine. (clarification - the letters under the scrape are perfectly visible... it's just the point that the letter don't show).
