We homeschool in our living room, so I like to be able to quickly transform our school room into a room that is company-ready. I was wondering if there is such a thing as a pull-down white board. Possibly it could also have maps, too. Ideas?

I don't know, but wow, would that be cool.
I've stashed whiteboards behind couches before and just pulled them out at need. That might be at least an interim solution for your double-duty space.

Perhaps a pull down map would look nice as decor all the time and could hide the white board behind it. For work, my dh has put up pieces of melamine from the home center as white boards. Much cheaper than buying a "real" white board, and you could cut it to the size of the pull down map you find?

Not exactly what you were thinking of, but dry erase markers work well on glass, so you might consider using a window, a mirror or a light colored picture with a subtle enough image that dry erase markings would show up nicely in front of the it.
I've used dry erase marker on windows, bathrooms mirrors, refrigerator doors and even on the fronts of pictures where I wanted to enhance an image with a verse (gold metallic markers also work well if you want something more permanent for that purpose). Fine tip dry erase markers do not work quite as well for writing on glass ~ thicker, wider tips work better.
Love the idea of a pull-down whiteboard, but wonder if it might be difficult to write on, since pulldown maps and such usually hang away from the wall somewhat. You might also have a problem of marker crossing over from the flexible "board" to the wall, since it wouldn't be stiff like typical whiteboards.
Just some thoughts, though I'm still intrigued by your idea. A quick google search produced hits for things like a pull down whiteboard/ projection screen. I also like Sally's idea of stashing a whiteboard behind a couch (our favorite spot for large unwieldy household objects, like child safety gates)! Good luck in your quest!

Anything laminated could work, although it seems to me that rolling up any potentially good whiteboard space (stiff, slick) would bend or crackle the surface so that it wasn't any good any more.
I had forgotten about mirrors as dry-erase surfaces. When my oldest was taking Latin in high school, she used to write all her vocab lists, conjugations, declensions, etc., on the full-length mirror on the outside of her bedroom door.
We also have a tile-topped table (our kitchen table) that we've often used as a dry-erase board. Just cover with tablecloth for dinner, or else spend the meal examining what you studied all day. These were big in the 1980s -- I got mine in 1986 from the Workbench store -- and as I recall, they also had coffee tables. Wonder where you could find one now . . . Or if you're handy, cover the top of an existing coffee table in smooth white or light-colored tile.
OR you can just hang a whiteboard and have a similar-sized picture or mirror to swap out with it when company comes. See "stash behind couch," above. :)

Has anyone tried a peel-and-stick white board? That might be a solution to my issue - having a picture to pop over the white board when school is done for the day.

How about one that you can hang from cup hooks under something...for me it is the mantle! It is up when I am teaching and definitely down for the Christmas stockings...lol
Maybe you can brainstorm of someplace that is under a shelf in a bookcase or the moulding around a window that can be used as a temporary hanging area??

I bought a peel and stick for that very reason Monica. I haven't picked out a picture yet though. It's very easy to use...
My only caveat -- I would put frog tape around the edges because I tend to erase off the vinyl and then it gets on the wall. I have a little black outline now. I *think* magic eraser will take care of it, but I haven't tried it out yet.
And my dh's caveat is that he thinks I'm inviting my 2yo to think it's okay to use markers on the walls.

This dilemma seems like on of the great mysteries of life. I finally hung one in our living room/entry way area. I intended to take it down on weekends and when guest are over. I was surprised when I took it down the first time and discovered big metal hardware attached to the wall. Dh didn't tell me about that part. So, it stays up at all times. It's become part of the décor now. Or in other words we got use to it and it doesn't stand out. It comes in handy for day to day stuff not school related and I use for that in equal time it is used for school stuff.
