I have never actually grouped our chores around meals. Usually, my kids play while I make lunch then go play some more while I clean up. This is their "lunch break". What does it look like in your home when the kids do chores after meals? I guess I'm wondering if this could be the change we need to make so that our house is more in order and I'm not so stressed about it all the time.

Right now I have my oldest 3 kids in charge of 3 areas of the house.. the Kitchen which includes the dishes and wiping everything down and cleaning out fridges and all that, The Living room which includes the floor around the desk (which is in the dining area attached to the kitchen but makes more sense with the living room jobs) and the Bathroom which includes helping with laundry (I'm still in charge of that one) and the hallway.. the hallway is included in the bathroom and laundry because we're going to have the dirty laundry along the hall (or moved there) so that the one in charge of collecting the laundry doesn't have to mess with going into other bedrooms and it'll help keep the bedrooms neater if I can get them putting the laundry where it can be taken care of

Then the next three are the main helpers for oldest three. So I have basically 2 capable kids for each area. Then the little ones can help as they're able and someone is willing to be patient with them. For instance while the laundry helpers have to put away linens and bedding and the baby's clothes.. the other smaller children are to be supervised in putting away their own clothes.. they're doing it but they need someone to keep an eye out that they're not just dumping it on the floor near their dresser

And it's not perfect. And yeah lunchtime is the hardest to do the quick clean up.. especially if we do sandwiches that has minimal dishes that can just wait for dinner dishes. And eating lunch is enough time to eat and have a break and then do quick chores before starting back up on school.

And with our small house I'm trying to get the kids into the habit of picking up often. I think once I get them doing it they'll figure out how much better it'll work than waiting until it's a disaster

My boys usually do their chores after meals too since one is in charge of clean up after breakfast and the other one after lunch. We also do chores in the 3 o'clock hour and it's not usually for a quick pick up before bed so that the house is clean for morning. Not too many chores in the morning because we are usually in a rush to start school. This seems like they are always doing chores, but really only 5-10 minutes to get it done (maybe 30 minutes total all day).

Thank you Jodie and Cassie. This helps. Right now we have a chore time at 3 or 4 in the afternoon. It works ... sort of, but when the house is a mess by noon it drives me crazy and I know I still have 3 or 4 hours before it's "fair" to ask the kids to do chores. (Now, does that sound silly or what?) I'm thinking it would be easier to do short bursts of chores throughout the day (like meal times) and hopefully, it will keep the house is some sort of order instead of it getting really messy by mid-day.

Yes, Becky! I'm bothered by messes too and depending on what it is I can't function until it's cleaned up. To help I do a quick clean up before my bedtime. Start off clean in the morning! And the quick clean up of the kitchen after meals helps too. Sometimes I just have to live with it until we are done with school. I save all big chores until that afternoon hour and some days it's unbearable.

Then we have days when I'm "lazy" and not at all bothered by the messes.
