I am trying to find a way to separate books on our bookshelf. I don't really like bookends. I saw what looks like giant clips on Jen's blog but I don't know where to find them. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any other ideas or suggestions would be great too!

Hi dinasiano!
These are the clip on book supports seen in these pictures:
There are a few other options I'd like to offer because I only use these clip on book supports to separate my liturgical reading right now. The clip on book supports are nice, but they do have drawbacks.
Pros -- clip on, enough room for a label, easily re-positionable, visually pleasing, if you're organizing a collection of books and only want to remove one small group from the collection at a time to place in a book basket, the book supports continue to hold the remaining books in place. LOVE THIS!
Cons -- they do take up valuable shelf real estate! Each shelf clip is 1 1/2 inches wide. You'll have to decide if it's worth it to lose that much shelf space. It's a definite con when shelf space is at a premium, but for my liturgical year reading it was worth it for me. I will probably only use a few more on my shelves, but with a lot less frequency.
Other options
** I have several of these plastic Princeton magazine file holders and use them everywhere! They're great for containing a small collection of books upright on a shelf, and work wonderfully as a bookend as well. They're wider than an average magazine file holder, thus offering more stability in holding a collection upright. They also have no front lip as most magazine file holders do, making them ideal for viewing spines of books, and helping with ease of removal and replacement of books. HIGHLY VERSATILE!!!
** These plastic book support book-ends from Demco are my favorite book ends! I like that they don't slide off the shelf, but they are easier to maneuver when adding/subtracting a lot of books from the shelf at once.

And I've been thinking about a cheap option. Cutting up the waxy cardboard boxes, maybe painting them and using them.

These bookends would also work for what you're looking for...LABELS....because the EDGES or SIDES are THICK....thus potentially providing a wide enough surface for a LABEL. Perhaps not as prominent as you'd like....but an option. These ARE great bookends for a reasonable cost....especially when they go on sale for 40-50% off, which they do occasionally.
DRAWBACK of these bookends: That WIDE PART is hollow and not flush with where the books touch the bookend, so sometimes books "catch" if you're putting a book in right next to the bookend. A bit annoying, but otherwise they are great!

I did! And, I was wondering how long it would take YOU to notice!!!!!  And here you are! It's the little things for us, isn't it?!
Here's the thing, you have to manually highlight the entire DEMCO URL and copy and paste. I have this little button on the far right of my URL window, and if I click it, it automatically highlights the entire URL for me. GREAT for long URLs I might be pasting, but doesn't work for DEMCO. I think I remember Erin saying this about Demco when she got a link to work for her, so I tried it...and it WORKED!!!!
And...good point on the book-ends! That is a consideration.

Which base style did you get and does it really stay in place? My shelves were..um..inexpensive, so the "wood" tends to scrape off with to much sliding around  .

I have the plain base book supports - the least expensive of the choices. My shelves are not expensive shelves either - they're wood laminate. The book supports haven't scraped the shelves. The plastic is nice and smooth on the bottom and the edges are smooth as well, so I don't think they would scrape your shelves with regular use. I do slide mine in and out, over and back quite a bit so I have given them a number of opportunities to show wear if they were going to.
Yes. They really do stay in place! This was one of my biggest criteria in choosing this style! Previously, I had the standard metal type book-ends, which I loathe! They're difficult to work with to me. I do a lot of removing and adding books, or even whole groups of books, so I wanted a book end that would be stable and also easy to work with in sliding down a shelf to accomodate more books. This book end meets my criteria well, which is one of the reason I like it so much! One of the simple reasons that makes this book end so stable is that the base of the book end is almost as long as the supporting side - this means that it is SUPER STABLE -- even if it is supporting a very tall book on my shelf.
The only drawback of this book end is the "hollow inside" which Suzanne describes above. It just makes it possible for a book to get "hung" as you slide it in next to the book supporting side, but as long as you're aware of this and angle it slightly away from the book end it isn't a problem.
