I am reorganizing our books on shelves and began wondering how other families divide their book categories on a shelf. Some shelves have 2 or 3 different categories and I would like to have a divider and some type of label to make it more likely for the books to make it back to the right place. A girl can dream, right?
God Bless,
Barb

I made my own book dividers/book ends by taping two bricks together with black duct tape. They are nice, sturdy and stay in place. You were probably hoping for some nicer options, but honestly, I hardly notice them on the shelves.

Jen had posted some nice ones, but I can't seem to find the references. The two downsides she mentioned were they could start being $$$ and that they take up some valuable real estate for the books.
I think they were similar to clip-on shelf label holders.

I got out my trusty label maker and just labeled right below the books what category they belonged in. So there was a whole bookcase of children's lit (no label needed) and then one shelf of poetry, with label below, then one or two of refernce, with labels, then etc., etc.
Is that what you're asking about?
Some shelves have more than one label, depending on size of category.
Once label maker is boughten, that's a cheap-ish fix.

I couldn't find Jen's pics either, you can sort of see them here.
But I've been thinking about making some, I was thinking of maybe some thick cardboard (cutting up fruit boxes) and covering them with pretty paper or a colour theme.

I've also been thinking about doing that, does it affect the timber?

Hi gals! I used these clip-on book supports from Vernon library supplies. You can see them and I talk more about them here at the bottom of this daybook post. Sure hope this helps!

Wow, the brick bookends are a great idea, the ladies on this board never fail to surprise me with their creativity and generosity. Half of my shelves are glass. Do you think I could cover the bricks with fabric or felt, or maybe they would be too heavy? Not sure . . . it has been a while since I handled a brick and can't remember how heavy they are.
Maybe for the glass shelves I should consider the cardboard. I was wondering about cardstock but was worried about how it might hold up. Cutting up boxes would work so much better.
Thanks for the link to Jen and the clip-on shelf label holders. I thought I saw the dividers on Jen's blog or on 4Real but searched and couldn't find where she talked about them. I wonder how they are working out for her, does anyone use this type of divider/label? Could they be used on glass shelves as well? Also, the site that sells them doesn't list the dimensions. I thought Jen mentioned something about them taking up a lot of space also.
I have most of the books back on shelves and will be finishing the Catholic and monthly themed books today. We have been stepping over piles of books for almost a week now and as I keep sorting them, the boys keep walking off with books they haven't noticed in a while. That is either good or bad news, depending on whether I am in Mom/teacher mode or librarian-must corral the books and get them organized mode. Now I just need to make sure to label them. I am thinking about using the duct tape system. It sounds so user friendly. How do you label your books?
God Bless,
Barb

Do the labels affect the timber? Let's just say that we don't have any fine furniture in that room. Some cheaper veneers do peel off with the labels when I change them, but it hasn't affected the edges of the shelves at all. I guess if you're at all worried, I'd "test in an inconspicuous place first."

I have been searching for pictures of books labeled with duct tape. Does anyone know where I can find some?
God Bless.
