I thought you all might like to read Bill Walton's tribute to Coach John Wooden, especially the part about how planning fits with a well-lived life:

This is exactly why Coach was so important to so many, many people throughout his life. He was famous for winning championships, developing young players and never cursing on the basketball court, but he should be remembered for exactly these things.
Live a clean life. Be part of the team. Give to others. Have a plan and execute it. Be faithful to your God, your spouse, your family and your calling in life. Coach Wooden didn't just teach these things. He lived them, and then some.
That's why he will be missed.
P.S. Coach used to run a basketball camp at Pepperdine University...and he played cribbage with my aunt on some of his breaks. Can you imagine?

what a great idea, Becky. I saw an interview with Walton and his sons who talked about how their dad would put Wooden quotes on their lunch bags for school and how their buddies would join around at lunch to read the quote.
When I have more book money in the budget, I'll be checking out some of Wooden's books. I'm curious about his pyramid.
what I find encouraging about "the triumph of executing an organized plan" is the idea that we can't assume that a plan will be implemented...that, in fact, many plans will be foiled. Yet, that doesn't mean we ditch planning. It means that we enjoy the triumph of execution when it happens. I like that  .

One of the things that Coach's players seem to remember and value most about him was his willingness to lead by example. He was clean-cut, didn't swear (no mean feat, on the basketball court), and was devoted to the important things in life (God, family, integrity). He used to give lessons on how to put on socks and shoes to his players - so they would not get blisters. (People ridicule this, but this dance mom totally gets it. Can't play or dance if your feet hurt, right?)
He insisted that his players present a clean-cut image, too. No one doubted his willingness to cut a disobedient player, either. They believed it because he lived his code of ethics.
I think a man who grew up without modern conveniences and handled fame with dignity and humility, who was not too proud to mop the gym floor before basketball practice, who believed in the fundamentals (of basketball and everything else) and who married the only girl he ever dated is a man to admire - and that's Coach Wooden.
I know there's a lot of eulogizing going on right now (and I'm part of it), but there's a reason. Those of us who grew up with the Bruin basketball legend and watched his players go on to become NBA greats (and some of us were lucky enough to be Bruins ourselves!) have always known these things about Coach. We feel blessed to have been part of this experience, even from the sidelines.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who played under Coach at UCLA, says his favorite John Wooden quote is:
