There's lots of discussion going on at the Workbox thread. Workboxes, FYN, Dawn's file system... The planner in me is just giddy ! Care to share what sort of organizational system you will be using for next year? I know I'll be using workboxes again, and I'm checking out the FYN. I'm also thinking about Dawn's File Crate System at least for our Liturgical Year resources. How about you?

I have to go back and check Dawn's File folder system. I like the idea of the planning the whole year out. The catholic link didn't work for me, so I'll have to try later.
I will definately be using workboxes again as well. We have gotten so much more done and on days that we would have just scrapped school before. Plus, we're getting to all those library books, I'm getting alone time with each of the kids, and I'm using all kinds of curriculum that I thought looked neat, but we never seemed to get to before!!

I'm working on sort of a combo of the workboxes and planning out the full year. I like the idea of not having to think too hard about what I'm putting into the workboxes ! The main curriculum is easy - just do the next math page or read the next chapter, etc. But the fun stuff - that the kids really look forward to - stretches my brain a bit too far! So I'm making a list of all the fun extras I can think of and I'm going to create a table on Word to plug them all into. Then, on Monday when I'm bleary eyed, I can check to see what I already have pre-planned. I'm actually going to try to put all the curriculum in the table as well so that I know what we're studying elsewhere and can tie things in. For example, if we're studying mammals in science, I will pull out the Schleich animal collection and do some graphing or other activity with them. If it's all planned out ahead of time and I can see it coming, I can prepare in advance. I'm sure that's as clear as mud, but my thought is, if I can put the time into planning over the summer, I think it will simplify things for the school year. (Of course, there's always some wiggle room for when I read a great idea here and want to use that instead of what I had planned!)

I am definitely intrigued by the FYN concept, but I need to tweak it so it isn't too removed from what has been working for the kids. I tweaked the Avilian Notebook system back when I was pregnant with #7 (who is a toddler now) and desperate for a method that would help the older kids become more independent.
Instead of a notebook, though, I use a folder for each kid who is doing formal, independent work. I developed a weekly assignment sheet that has tidy checklist boxes (which really appeals to my ds, 12). Much of it is just "do the next thing" (for math, vocab, copywork, etc.).
Reading assignments for history and science are taken from my master plan for the year (science plans didn't hold for long this year, sigh). My history plans are set up similarly to the RC History plans, where I can see the various ability levels at the same time. However, I decide on a weekly basis how to break down the assignments for each day.
I guess my main desire this summer is to eliminate or diminish the time spent planning each week. If I have daily breakdowns for the readings done ahead of time, that would help a lot. And for some reason, the idea of having daily non-dated work assigned never occurred to me. That's what is appealing about the FYN descriptions I've read in the other thread.
I like my plans to be tidy, which is why traditional dated planners have never been successful for me. Too much erasing and changing things around!
I need that flexibility for my plans, should we decide to take a day off or someone needs to go to the dentist, etc.

Not too long ago I somehow found this by Maria Rouix. I was inspired by the non-dated format as you mention above Valerie. Then the whole FYN concept added to the appeal. That is why I'm working on this table in Word. I could probably just do it like Maria did and it might be more simple.

Off topic, but Oh my that is one huge amount of work for a child on that link you sent Becky! (I could show it to my kiddos on the days when they feel I am a workhorse!!)... but I do like the non-dated format, and I think it could work well.

The website is here Kirsten. It was discussed on the 4th and 5th pages of the Workbox thread below.

I never thought about this, either! But it makes so much sense!
My summer goal is to get lessons planned completely for the whole year, books sorted and culled, and revamping our whole "school room."
I am also planning on Dawn's crate system. That will help me keep up on the up-coming feast days or seasonal celebrations/events, especially if I am going "dateless" on my lesson planning.
Right now, with our lovely weather, not quite June, I am feeling up to the task. But I know how quickly the summer can get away with me (especially this year with getting my second ds ready for college in the fall.) But that is precisely why I need to get on top of it all, now. Even with dc leaving the nest, it seems it all gets busier! Trying to live in the moment and enjoy them all, because someday I know it will be just a memory! OK, now I need to go post on the "over 40" area!
God Bless,
Stacy in Lovely MI

I have been checking out and mulling over all of these different filing systems. I think I have tweaked and melded them enough to work properly for me.
I love Dawn's filing system. I think I will have a holiday crate that has file folders for each month. Each of those months will have the Catholic Mosaic and other liturgical celebration information in addition to the big holidays we celebrate. I think this will help me to incorporate more of the church season into our lives. I want to be like Jessica at Shower of Roses!
Then, since I'm not into dates, I'm going to divide the wkbk txtbks we use into chapter files in another file box/crate. I think I'll color code the folders. This way I can pull them out when we're ready. Sometimes we take a break from a subject for awhile and run off on a rabbit trail. This way I'll be able to come right back to where we need to be.
I figure I can do this with unit studies, too. I'll just put a sticker tab that sticks up, so that I'll have the subjects divided. This way my super planner phases won't be wasted. Usually, I'll print stuff off and put it away for later, but I figure btween this and the workboxes I'll know where everything is.
Wow, that was a long post!

Valerie
I have excel spreedsheets of what I call our 'Weekly Expectations'. This year dh got involved and created a pivot table in excel so all I have to do each week is change the week number and print. This table covers all the children.
The sheets consist of the expectation and tick boxes. Dh calls this the control factor.
I'm happy to share with you if it helps, just pm me your email address, I'm happy to share with anyone if it helps feel free to pm me.
