With the recent "planning" carnival, which I still am reading, and Dawn's recent question about mid-year review I am wondering when you all "plan." How do you fit it in to your daily life and not have planning rule your life. Between menu's, financial, activities, housework, and school I feel I spend so much time "planning." And maybe too little "doing."

Anne,
Are you talking about hommeschool planning or just planning in general?

Planning of everything.
This was my new plan--and it isn't working--
School planning on Monday, menu planning on Tuesday, find a craft on Wed for dd, bills on Thursday. This is for the next week. It doesn't seem to be working. I get the menu done(and grocery list) but school planning only gets 1/2 done. I am struggling with bills. I tried to set up Thursday for some planning while the kids watch EWTN but lately we have had social activities as it seems our only free time that matches the other family.
I am just wondering if there is an easier way?? Maybe I am not a good planner as much as I like to do it

I plan my menu and fill out my grocery list on grocery day (usually Thursday), in the afternoon while the kids have free time. School planning I work on in the evenings after the kids are in bed, or Sunday afternoon.

I do my planning on weekends. I do my menu on sat morning and shopping sat afternoon. Then I have the rest of the weekend to do school planning.

We do ALOT of "seat of the pants" planning , but I also have been known to take off a day or two, here or there, to stop, regroup and replan .... I go with what works, but if something isn't -- we stop. For instance, this year I thought Singapore Math would be a fabulous Math program, but after a four-month (or so) trial, I've decided with my 3rd, 2nd and K'er, WHY am I so worried about math? They need to learn to love learning first and then we can get the other specifics in.
So, to answer your original question -- I plan at the beginning of each semester and then "tweak" throughout the year ... going with what works and what doesn't ... I spend Fri-Sun planning the week but it's very loose so I can adapt as we go...

I start planning on Thursday for all the areas, by beginning lists for each of those areas. Then I can just think about them whenever I have a few minutes.
I do most of my grocery listing when I'm cooking dinner because that's when I'm most likely to notice what we don't have in the house.
I try to lesson plan on Thursday and Friday when I'm writing out what we got done the psat week, and filing away papers.
I sit and plan menus on Sunday afternoon and finalize the grocery list. I plan the housework rotation at the same time.
On Monday morning I review the lesson plans quickly so I know where to start. Monday morning is one of the days the kids clean the house so it is a lighter day of school.
My husband does the finances but I usually do the other "office" work (like insurance issues etc) on Friday when I'm straightening my desk. Then I make a list of phone calls to make on Monday.
I would like to say I plan crafts on Wednesday because but I haven't gotten that one down yet , Crafts are my weak point.
ETA: It occured to me that your planning might well get more streamlined as it becomes a habit. That was how it worked for me.

we have a budget that dictates a lot of when we do things. I pull the budget out every payday
that, by default, includes:
menu planning/grocery (every payday)
non-grocery purchases (once a month)
bills (every payday)
maintaining the house is a daily thing (picking up and decluterring before dinner and daily chores before breakfast)
floors, bathrooms, cat box, and trash done the day before trash pick up (twice a week here)
laundry is daily, bedding is as needed or weekly
clean the frig out and tidy kitchen day before grocery shopping so I get an idea of what's on hand for that menu plan that will need to be made (therefore day before payday)
Lesson planning is often Friday afternoon. I look at what goals weren't met during the week and put those at the top of the list for the next week, look at the calendar to see what I need to plan around, and go from there to decide what I can fit into the schedule as far as academics.
what else??... you know once you've been doing this for so long it's really hard to break it all down and explain how it actually happens!
Sad truth though is that no matter what anyone else does, you have to figure out what will work for you.
