Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So... I was looking at candy prices (among others) this evening and

so I started wondering what sort of homemade treats would work well put into stockings.. fudge would be good.. but how do you package up something that's smaller pieces (like a rocha or toffee) without it costing as much as you'd be saving making things and not have them falling out all over the place or being so persnickity that I want to throw it all across the room.

i'm not even sure they'd be cheaper anyway.. but

Jodie, could you use wax paper or parchment to wrap the candies? Tie the ends with simple ribbon or even tape it closed. This might be time consuming, but you could cut larger pieces and therefore fewer.
What about?
Buckeyes
Caramels
Fudge

I have never made real candy(candy canes...) myself. It is not something you can do with little children imo, because of the temperature of the sugar HOT HOT HOT. That was always my excuse anyway. It is doable, I just haven't been that ambitious.

Don't forget the shiny red apples, clementines and nuts in the stockings! They are great fillers!

Perhaps you could search thrift shops for small tins to hold a variety of homemade candies. Decorative cellophane treat bags also work well. We make candies for dh's fellow employeese for Christmas and simply use decorative paper plates slipped inside a bread bag tied with ribbon. Mil used to make fudge for Easter and Christmas, cut into shapes with a cookie cutter then wrapped individually for each recipient ~ a favorite family tradition. Rice Krispie treats are fun with seasonal colored cereal.

I plan to use twine and parchment paper with little sprigs of green and cinnamon sticks for gift and just twine and parchment paper in stockings. It's rustic and old-fashioned looking and the last time I did it, years ago, I got tons of compliments.

Oh, I used a little double-sided tape on some pkgs.

Well, for my kids I would do just plain ole ziploc snack bags.

I don't know if you have a CostCo, but we sometimes find a large container of individually packaged small Toblerone bars. They are already packaged and so I just throw a few into each stocking.

yeah I pretty much don't have any options for cheaper treats unless it's bought online or in a regular grocery store or drug store or the like (safeway, thriftway, rite aid) now sometimes I can get real good sales.. I guess having 10 stockings to fill now even if the baby can't have anything candy yet, is way to easy to see the $1 item as $10 and the $1.50 items as $15 and wow that multiples up fast

I guess I should also remember that I am normally not thinking of buying those things until after Thanksgiving. I wasn't expecting to see my ILs before Thanksgiving and instead we saw them for the baby's baptism last weekend and won't be seeing them at Thanksgiving and that's got me feeling in some ways like Thanksgiving is over

I wouldn't mind doing some homemade treats but I'm not even sure that would be cheaper than buying anyway.

Jodie,
What about caramel corn? It's easy to make, not very expensive, and it could go in those plastic bags that you get at the Dollar stores. You know, the ones that are already decorated with snowmen and such. Plus, it would make a nice filler!
