Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

[deep breath]

Here's the plan...since some colleges require up to three, Libby has decided to take Biology, German and Literature. Bio and German I'm OK with, but since our lit courses have been a bit--er--unorthodox , I am worried a bit. Has anyone taken lit or any other SAT subject tests (they used to be called SAT II in my day, dearies ). Are there test prep book you folks might suggest over others?

MacBeth -

Is there an SATII for Composition (or some such)? Back in the day (further back than your day ....) I took something like that. It might be safer than doing the literature. Does the testing website give you some sense of a list of standard works that might be covered? It seems to me that much of what gets read in PS is not what I would consider classic literature, so I would be very interested to know how such a test can be put together. UNLESS, it's more about analysis techniques. Maybe they give you a passage to read and then ask some questions that are meant to evoke an analytic response (possibly something like: how is the mood developed in this piece?). When I did the English AP there was a lot of that sort of thing on it. But, again, that was SOOOO long ago that it might not still be that way.

Sorry, I'm not really providing much help, just trying to get my head around the same sorts of questions. When you find out, would you please share the answers? Thanks.

Peace,
Nancy

MAcBeth!!!

You're worried about Libby scoring on a lit test!?!?!?

I'm sure she is better read (orthodox or unorthodox) than other high schoolers who take the test.

Kayleigh took it in October. I had to turn the score over to my teacher-aunt to find out how she did. My aunt has had to confer with another teacher she knows who has a Master's Degree in reading these tests. I'm still waiting to hear how she did.

Kayleigh took the ACT in October as well. She'll take it again in April to try getting a higher score (though her previous score was good enough to qualify her for TOPS and scholarship offers ).

I should have clarified. In Louisiana, the ACT score is everything. And TOPS is provided by the state to all who score a 19 or better (21 for hsers ) and it covers the whole college expense of tuition and books depending on how high the score was.

[Edited: I'm not even sure why Kayleigh took the SAT except that her daddy wanted her to. She plans to attend college her in LA and TOPS will cover that as long as she stays in the state.]

Cay,
That's a great deal! In MO, we need to score a 30 on the ACT for state money (Bright Flight). Scholarships start at 28 at most state universities.
Anyway, I can't help with SAT's. Both older boys have CLEPed out of several classes and could give info on study guides for those. AP's and SAT's are more highly accepted though.
Blessings,
Stephanie

MacBeth:

Isn't your son at a private school? I'm sure they'd be willing to give you the scoop as I'm sure their students take the things.

We didn't bother with the SAT II because our dd knew where she was going and these were not required. Sorry I cannot help you more here. I do know we called and spoke to some SAT people at different points ( It is the first time I did something on-line and I had trouble figuring this out but they were very helpful).

I know the AP (different tests and some schools now require 3 of these instead of SAT IIs) covered very dark lit. - but you can look at info on-line about AP stuff. (Just mentioning that as I suspect the SAT II is similiar in content, if not format). The hard part for AP testing is finding a school willing to let your student take the test with them. We've found the most cooperation from the local Catholic high school (provided they are offering the particular tests at the time).

Sorry, I didn't mean to diverge - the AP tests are more expensive than the SAT II but a lot of schools will give actual credit if you score a 4 or 5 - and they like anything 3 and above. It seems to justify to them that your coursework at home was demanding enough.

I hope someone on these boards have taken these SAT II as we will be doing this dance again in a few years!

Janet
