Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In our various discussions, we have mentioned the importance of finding good mentors for teens, especially our boys. In the book, A Thomas Jefferson Education, this is one of the main sources for forming our children into leaders.

How do we find a mentor? Has anyone been successful with this?

Molly, several years ago I decided I wanted to find a "mentor" for my oldest son. At the time he was about 9 years old. He is now 17! My dh is not Catholic and I wanted a male(s) in Billy's life who were living their Catholic faith. Of course, my dh was and is a wonderful father, but I knew the importance of Billy being around a male figure who loved his Catholic faith. I prayed and prayed about this for quite sometime. At the time, we lived in a diocese that was not the most orthodox and finding this mentor was a difficult task. At some point, a Legionary of Christ priest made a visit to our parish. Over a period of time he started visiting once a month and meeting with a group of boys, including my son for sports, discussion, fun, etc. He became my son's mentor. This relationship has continued now for eight years ... not with the same priest, but with the Legionaries of Christ. Through their Conquest Club and now Young Men's team, my son has received formation in his faith (complimenting, of course, what he gets at home) that I could never have dreamed of.

I am not necessarily suggesting the Legionaries, in particular. But either a priest who is vibrant and "real" or someone involved in the parish (another dad or young man) who has that special gift of relating well with young people. Start praying about it. Ask God to put that person in your son's life.

I will pray for you!

I found mentors sometimes came up naturally - often by befriending a local priest and through involvement in volunteer work ( at the parish and other volunteer work).
