It feels funny to post under this topic as I don't have any teens at the moment!  But, I read this interesting article that I thought some might find of value in helping their teens discern what they're going to do "when they grow up"  .

I want to talk a little bit about the author's point that there is more to life than making money. That's very true.
On the other end of that though, if you are always struggling from month to month, if you have rare spare time because you are always working to pay the bills, that's not very fulfilling either.
My husband wanted to be a craftsman. He became a skilled musical instrument repair technician and he is very good at what he does. I'm very proud of him. However, we struggle to make ends meet every single month and it becomes exhausting.
I'd like my children to hit somewhere in the middle between these two extremes.

That is so true. I have one son who loves woodworking and one who just wants to farm (no, we are not farmers) They could not earn incomes from these 2 interest and their heart desires until maybe years later when the have built up the "careers" so to speak. So I have talked to them about looking at other jobs and making their interest more like hobbies or future jobs when they might have more $$$ available. The jobs that are in demand really have no interest to these boys and I am afraid they will get stuck in jobs that they really don't like and give up on their true heart desires.
The one who enjoys woodworking we are spending a little bit of money on the tools of the trade (this can get expensive) and he is learning from a Master woodcarver but his teacher also has to work another job to support his family even though he is soooooo good at what he does. He says not many can make this their sole job. The other one who is interested in farming is learning and working with a few gentleman but we have no land to pass onto him and land is so expensive then the equipment to run farms yikes!!! So I wonder how do I lead them to a succesful job that will fullfill them?
Just my rambling thoughts on this subject I did enjoy the article very much.

Elena and Jackie,
I agree with both of you -- to a point. Way back in the mid-90s, I read a book called Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow -- she basically says that when you're passionate about something your priorities change so that you can attain all that you need and "want" becuase you're doing God's will.
My dh was a biotech corporate guy -- he jumped ship to teach in the Catholic schools (where NO ONE gets rich  ) and yes, we don't have everything we want, but we sure have everything we need.
Sometimes it's hard becuase we want our kids to be successful -- but if they follow God's will for them (which just may be farming or woodworking or fixing musical instruments) then they WILL be successful.
Just my $.02! And understand, I've been there and am there on trying to make ends meet, and yes, it is a monthly (if not, daily) struggle -- but dh is very he needs to be and I'm where I need to be: home with the kids.

Mary, I read that book too and to a point, she is correct. However, sometimes you just don't get what you need. You just don't. You learn to work around it.

I understand but how many husbands are in jobs that they don't like. Mine is, but he doesn't complain and know he is doing what God has called him to do to support his family. But he is very strong in his faith. I have seen two homeschool families fall apart due to the husband not enjoying his job and feeling the pressure of having to support stay at home wife and mothers. I just fill in our society today a man cannot follow his true desires and most of those jobs don't provide enough for one income families anymore.
I try to foster my kids talents and interest but always have to remind them of reality of what jobs are out there and what will provide for a family if they plan on marrying. But I always tell them to take it prayer and to always ask God to guide them in their choices.

Yea, I think I'm kind of with you on this Jackie.
We recently had cable installed (I work on line and needed a more dependable internet connection). Two men came out and they were very friendly and chatty. Turns out they both made over $80,000 a year! the second one did say he works 10 hours a day but that he enjoyed his job and the company trained him. He encouraged me to have my son apply when he turns 18 because they need workers. .
$80,000 a year with a high school diploma, and they train you.
It just boggles the mind!
