I'd like to send a care package to a young lady who is finding her first year away from home to be a bit lonely. I don't want to include a lot of food, but other "comfort items." She is a devout Catholic and a prolific reader. Ideas, suggestions?

What a sweet idea! How surprised and loved she will feel!
I was trying to think back to the things that gave me comfort as a Catholic in college:
a rosary
a book mark with some special scripture verse
a holy card
a book of quotes by Mother Theresa
Gregorian chant to listen to while studying
Herbal tea bags
Pictures and/or letters by your children
Well, that is all that I can think of now.

I love Mare's list. I know you said you didn't want to send food, but I'd throw a package of fancy cookies in there anyway -- some Mint Milanos or something. College food is so blah, and such a little inexpensive luxury would be a blessing to her.
Also, who is the patron saint of students, or the patron saint of homesick people? You could find a nice medal/prayer card and have it blessed for her.

Small handcream
Just thinking about all those little comfort kinds of things that we all take for granted when our mom buys them regularly and they are always just *there* when we are living at home.
Just a few thoughts.

Do you know her well enough to send pain reliever and cold and flu remedies? That is the kind of thing thats hard to get when you need it and feel crummy.

Quarters are always a welcome gift!
Little gift certificates for those little necessities that crop up.
How about a stand-up San Damiano Cross (or any kind of cross0? I bought a cross for a boyfriend who wanted something on his desk, but wasn't allowed to put holes in the wall. I later bought a San Damiano cross for my dh. It has a stand, but also can be removed and hung on the wall.
Another idea are those little hinged icons, (diptych or triptych) that are little enough to carry in the pocket or place on her desk or something. My dh is using my very little one, or else I could share pictures. Here are some from Leaflet Missal, but they aren't tiny, except for the Our Lady of Good Counsel one. This one. From Aquinas and More this example. Daughters or Catholic Shop might have some.

Is she a close family friend? If so perhaps a recorded tape of messages from family and friends, along with a home-made mini picture album. A disposable camera and a blank album so she can make her own memory book to send back (or keep). This could even be a single small scrapbook that you send back and forth, each adding pictures and notes to it each time it is sent.
Stamps and a stationary set.
Anything home-made by the children if she is close with them.
One of the lovely Marian craft kits (like Alice has done)either for her to do or already done by the children.

Letters from your children may be the most appreciated, my daughter treasured letters from her cousins.
Quarters, dryer sheets, tea and cocoa, cup a soup, sheet spray (I have seen this at Bath and Body works-not sure the real name), seasonal window clings, ....
Stuff that is useable so it won't take up precious dorm space.
Regular notes seemed to matter even though we email and talk on the phone.

I kept a picture of the Pope in my dorm room.
In This House of Brede was a book I just read and wish I had read a long time ago.
I also remember fun times with my roommate putting on mud facial masks (Do you know what I mean?). A girly comforting thing to me and I'm not often girly.

Does she have access to a computer? My dc are currently working on a picture CD for their favorite babysitter who will be leaving for college this year. We found tons of pictures of them, scanned them, and put them onto a cd with music that she will like. It's turning out really cute as many of the pictures have her in them as well. She's been so dear to our family, it is sad to see her go! Now I have to find a new babysitter. Not an easy task these days.

In addition to everyone's lovely ideas you could send a spiritual bouquet card from your family. We like to make ones where you add a sticker for each prayer/sacrifice offered for the person's intentions. You could draw a bouquet of leaves and stems, and then add flower stickers on top. Another idea is to draw a picture of the Blessed Mother (or glue on a holy card) and add rose stickers at her feet. In addition to the obvious spiritual benefit, there is nothing as comforting as knowing someone is praying for you!
