Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Just wondering if those of you who own HSOYD could share your opinions on this. I wish the CHC website had more samples of the book on their website, but unfortunately they don't. It would be a big nvestment for us financially to purchase this, and since it isn't returnable under CHC's return policy, I am hoping to get as much giodance as possible before purchasing in it. I have read the reviews on HSOYD here at this site and others, but still cannot make up my mind.....

Thanks so much in advance!

It doesn't strike me as CM per se by CM methods can be integrated easily. Here are some of the benefits of owning the book as I see 'em:

1. I connects our faith with different ways of homeschooling high school as opposed to just a "school at home" approach. This lends itself to reference to sound arguments for doing what you are doing!

2. It is a book meant for both parent and student. I like that we are on the "same page." My teen, needs lots of repetition to remember all that is expected of her and like to have many options to keep her optimistic.

3. It has forms that can be copied (although I'll probably make my own using modified versions.)

4. I anticipate talking with other parents and saying, "What did you think about the idea on pg xx?"

5. I like knowing that I can look for recommendations on a variety of topics.

6. I want to support those who put this book together. I want them to know that I appreciate their efforts AND I want to send a message that this book is valuable.

Can I do highschool without it? Yes. Am I glad I don't have to? Yes

Love,

I'm not good at posting links here, but there is an older thread with extensive reviews that might help.

Offhand, I would not say that its CM as much as its kind of "Moore Method-ish." It presumes that the child has passions and knows at least a little bit, what he or she wants to do in life. If you have seen the Middle School Lesson Plans and wonder if this is similar, its *NOT*. Its nothing like the MSLP's, which make specific curriculum suggestions along with guides on how to use them on a daily/weekly basis. If you have an idea of what your child's high school years are going to look like and want some guidance, it might be useful. If you aren't a Moore Method kind of mom and are looking for something to provide structure, you may be disappointed.

Honestly, its a nice book to have on my shelf, but so far, I haven't used it as much as I thought I would. If I had seen it first, I might have waited for a used copy to come available.

hope this helps

Books,

Thanks for directing me to the reviews of HSOYD. Somehow, I still cannot get definte "handle" on the book even now. I think I may be one of those people who needs to have the hard copy in hand. Perhaps at some point, I will be able to find a used copy.....

I totally understand not being able to visualize HSOYD. Its hard to explain it to someone. Its unlike anything I've ever seen before. I think it would be fair to say that its almost like a reference manual more than a hand holding guide. I just read your post where you said you had just finished reading the Moore's book. You might like it! But I would definitely try to see a copy, first.

I know, I wish I knew someone close by with the HSOYD, but I don't know anyone who has the book. Maybe CHC will put some better samples up at some point in the future???

Other than that, I think my only hope, if curiousity keeps tapping me on the shoulder, is to try to find it used.

Tea,
Where do you live? Perhaps, I could lend you my copy for a week or two for you to get a feel for it. We are doing Seton by the book, so to speak, at least for the first semester. So I don't think I will be referring to HSOYD for at least the next several weeks.
