How else does he propose to get all his things to the bathroom? Is he going to stuff his pockets with soap, shampoo, and deodorant? I just can't picture any other way to do it! I'm sure you can find more "manly" caddies if that's his concern.

How about something like this from Lands End:
Hanging travel kit
Small Travel kit
They don't scream, "I'm a brightly colored plastic organizer caddy."

My dh and son use a small bag to stuff everything in when they're at scout camp and such.. don't have anyone in college at the moment. My oldest daughter uses one of those bags that opens up and hangs.. different than the ones linked but same concept. When I was in the dorms, we had lockers in the bathroom so I didn't have to carry things further than across the walkway between the lockers and the showers.

Hey, I didn't weigh in earlier because I could not consult my expert at that time. So, my recent college grad son just got back from a trip so I could ask. He said he did not use one (though we did buy one) but he calls himself a radical minimalist (got rid of a bunch of his stuff after freshman year - took that Franciscan philosophy to heart... ). Guys don't take as much down to the bathrooms. If they are showering they take their soap and shampoo. If they are shaving they take their razor and shave cream. If they are brushing teeth they take toothbrush and tooth paste. That being said for him personally, I asked if any guys used them and he said maybe 50-50, so there are guys who do use them. In general they definitely don't use as much "product" as girls, so even if they want a caddy it could be smaller. My oldest son isn't here to ask either but I think he did use his a little more (he has a more organized personality). For them I just bought a plastic basket - no handles, which I think keeps it from being "purse-like."
I think the good old fashioned men's "shave kit" toiletry style is a nice option. I think this one is a practical style - breathable mesh , dries easily.
That is from the Dormco site , which if you haven't seen it has lots of practical dorm options all in one place - decent prices, too.
