Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I got a book called "Write Source" - but it is NOT working - it looked like it would have g

Grammar review and also composition. But the grammar is just a series of tests - not review. SOOOO dd only knows what she DOESN't remember!

I need a text book fast! One that is a grammar review and composition writing. The purpose to prepare for SAT/ACT and also of course college prep.

DD is grade 10.
Suggestions?

Rod and Staff? They are a Mennonite press, so keep that in mind.

Not too expensive either.

Also starting to think - will go to Barnes and Noble and get a SAT prep book for just grammar and essay - since that is our main goal this year: to prepare to take SAT in may or june!

Yes...all research is pointing to practice tests as being THE WAY to prepare.

For comp, check out CK-12's Commonsense Composition. It has the distinct advantages of being free and instantaneous, but I also think (the occasional political intrusion aside) it's quite well done as a run through some basic modes of composition.

Thanks for this link Sally, I am intrigued by this site as it's a little like Khan, very user friendly for both teacher and student

Have you had experience with other aspects of it besides the composition, which I might add will be on my ds15's worklist for next week

Thanks,
Meredith

I really like the composition- I am using it with a very mathy senior who prefers to not write!

My ds13 is also using the Physical Science course. It is nice and meaty in my opinion, and has the nice option of the imbedded Khan and other videos. It has a few review questions each section which seems just right. It covers pre-chem and physics quite nicely.

Meredith --

I've just pulled out their Geometry Flexbook for my 10th grader to use supplementally. I really like the way it's laid out -- I'm not sure it's enough for a full, meaty course, but he's already doing a combination of Teaching Textbooks and Art of Problem Solving, and I was looking for an alternative to, or addition to, the Khan videos -- though I have to say, this particular kid has taught himself math very successfully thus far with just a book (Saxon for pre-algebra and 2 years of alg) with Khan. Anyway, it seems to me as though he could fairly easily target a skill or concept he needed to work on in the CK-12 book and really benefit from the reading, exercises, and quizzes.

A friend of mine who's a high-school math teacher was telling me just last week that her high school has gone textless, and that she leans very heavily on CK-12, as she's supposed to be inventing her own textbooks for her mostly upper-level classes. I take that as a credible recommendation.

I do really, really like Commonsense Composition. We've used Jensen's Format Writing for years, and while it's totally dry, I like the way it teaches the nuts and bolts of the writing process, from the sentence level up. I'm doing some tutoring on the side at the moment, and both my students are at the level of needing Jensen's for a foundation. But my aim, if I end up working with them over the long term, is to "graduate" to CC. Their sections on literary writing are especially good. In fact, I'll probably assign them to the senior I'm currently teaching, who's totally lost in honors English . . .

And as an aside, in case you're wondering, what makes an "honors" English student in my local public schools, apparently, is basic politeness and willingness not to fall asleep in class. This kid is totally nice, and he's very easy to work with, and he's not lacking in intelligence. He's quite good at math, apparently. But in 12 years of public school, he hasn't learned to write beyond the level of functional literacy, or to read critically, so he's lost in his senior British Lit course. And boy, is it late in the day to fix all that. I'm grateful that CC exists, because it lays out so much that he hasn't learned in a fairly accessible form. Makes me feel that there's hope!

Thanks Sally, I spent so time poking around there and am definitely impressed. We will bookmark this one for various fill in the gaps as well

And sheesh about the honors eng student, so sad to hear the reality of our state in education in this country
