Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi have any of you used either of these two literature programs? What did you find to be the strengths or weaknesses of each?

I think Kolbe is excellent. I have yet to see a single product from IEW I can stand.

Kolbe
Very good at relating past to present.
Connects politics and economics and the philosophies that have influence the states and modern situations.
It's a history course, not a writing course about history
Readings and extrapolations might be too difficult below 11th grade or in high school for some students.
It's almost entirely primary source documents based.
Spurred lots of discussion here.
Needs parent discussion.

Depends on a few factors;

1. The student - how strong are they at reading/writing/research

2. Your plan - are you following a traditional route with whole credits for American Lit and History - or a more classical route with US History and Lit included in Modern history and lit credits

Here are my views:

Excellence in Lit - is an almost college level, survey class. Just American Lit. Lots of reading, lots of research and "high level" writing assignments for each work/author. Good for the student who is a voracious reader and is already very skilled at writing and lit analysis. There is no detailed lit analysis in this program. Lots of connections to make and comparisions, study of relevant lit period and connections between writers. Worked out great for my child who is a voracious reader and prolific writer.

Kolbe - follows Kolbe's Classical and Ignatian method. Includes more than just American lit. More guidance for high schoolers - weekly lesson plans and study guides.   Very good study guides and grading guidelines for parent-teacher. Better for my kids that need a weekly plan, more strucutured format and study guides.
