Help! My 18 yo ds putzed around this year, wouldn't do his work, etc. so I sent him to our local comm. college to finish up spring semester. He'd already signed with the marines in the delayed entry program, to leave this
Nov for boot camp. Since the semester ended he's been very lazy about getting his grades to me - he has to log into a specific part of the college's website to get them - they don't mail them. He's had all kinds of
excuses about forgetting his password, etc. but it comes down to he really thinks he failed the science and doesn't want to even get the grades. Now his recruiter is pressuring him to produce a diploma, and I've had to tell him ds hasn't graduated yet. Ds is willing (supposedly) to take another class at his own expense and try to finish it quickly. He used Thinkwell this year for economics and that worked well, but the sciences they have are either AP or college level, and there's no way he can do those quickly enough to get a passing grade in time. I've looked at Switched-On
Schoolhouse and Lifepac physics and it looks like those might be possibilities. He's already taken Apologia biology and took a half-year of Kolbe chemistry for me, but doesn't want more chemistry. He just needs one
hs semester's worth, so he would only need 1/2 of a typical hs course.
Anyone have any other suggestions, or know anything about SOS or LifePac?
It needs to be something he can work through on his own, but has obvious grading to it - quizzes, tests, etc. that I can easily grade. I have no problem helping in science but this is all his own fault so I feel heshould
have to do it on his own, and I'm not wasting my summer holding his hand through this. (it's too late for him to retake through the college)
Personally, I wouldn't mind letting him take the consequences and have to take this in the fall at the cc since he procrastinated on getting the grades, etc. but if he doesn't get this done soon, he'll be discharged and they won't let him enlist again. I really think he needs something like the military to get his life straightened out so I hate to let him miss going.

I was going to suggest Greg Landry's online science summer camps but I think they've already all started. You can check his website here: http://landryacademy.com. I don't know if he offers the classes as recordings.
Homeschool Connections has a couple of science courses as recordings. They're anatomy & physiology. One is on the circulatory system and the other on the immunity system. He could get through both in a summer. But he would need to be self-directed since it's a recorded, not a live, class. Or have you working close with him. You can email me if you want more info.
Another option to look into is:
www.catholicscience.com
Catholic Science
Courses in biology, chemistry and physics.
Blessings,
Maureen :)

Another idea is Khan Academy. There are free videos to watch and loads of them on science. There are also free exercises but that's a new offering so I don't know if they have them for the upper sciences.
Note that Khan is not going to be from a Catholic worldview (nor is Landry) like HC or Catholic Science. But for a quick summer fix it may fit the bill.

Another choice could be an online class from Clonlara. One of my older kids used a few of their courses as we are enrolled, but I believe that you can enroll in an online course now without being Clonlara students, but it costs more.
Besides being able to work at an accelerated pace if desired, it is also nice that no additional text is required. It's also completely on his shoulders; you wouldn't be involved at all.
Let me see if I can find a link (haven't used these courses in several years).
Actually, they now have a program that fits your needs exactly -- except for the cost! (The courses are pretty inexpensive if you are already enrolled.)

Fwiw....

Thanks, Deborah, that looks great except for the cost
Maureen, thanks for all your ideas. I had looked at HS connections already but he did one year of anatomy, physiology and forensics already so I didn't want to repeat that.
Catholic science looks good except the physics isn't available until fall, and he's had bio and hated the one semester of chem he had
I decided just to go ahead with the LifePac from Alpha Omega. Obviously NOT a Catholic POV but hopefully not anti-Catholic, and right now he just needs something he can do on his own, quickly, that's easy for me to grade.
Thanks for all the ideas.

Karen, I can't help with science suggestions but I do want to encourage you ! I've found myself in similar situations along the way with my dd and...some of our children really need whatever it takes to get them out the door. I'm so proud of your son's decision to enlist in the Marines so now you all just need to Get Him There! All the hoop-jumping, natural consequences, and sighing can get long and frustrating for everyone involved...but right in there is the real (messy) test. So I'm encouraging you as you all press (wrestle) forward. His opportunity to enlist is too great to get snagged on a science course - no matter his previous lapses into immature shenanigans. He's growing up before our eyes .
Love,

Thank you Angie, for that note. Yes, I just feel like getting him actually off to boot camp and beyond is going to be more helpful in the long run than insisting he do a more academic course that will hold him up, even though it's rewarding his mistakes in the short run.
However, I'm not completely happy with the situation; although he enlisted to do active duty, now he's requested that he be allowed to do reserves first and then go active after 2-3 yrs. This is all because he started getting more serious with a girl he's been dating, and she (16) doesn't want him to go off at all. I have nothing personally against her but I pray that this relationship will just drift apart when he goes to boot camp and he'll change his mind. If he stays around here, he'll just keep working at the drug store and spending his money on electronics, etc. and just delay his growing up that much longer.
