We have decided to use Rosetta Stone for Foreign Language Credit. Now we have one more choice to make. It is offered in a "Spain" version or a "Latin American"
version.
Any insight as to which one to choose? If it helps, DS will be taking foreign language for the first time and his goal is to major in theology at Franscian University.
Thank you!
Dana

IMHO, Latin America Spanish. The Spain Spanish is heavy on the vosotros and other things that we don't use here in the United States as well as other parts of well, Latin America.
I'm Cuban American born in Spain but I think for ease of what you will truly use, the Latin America one is a better choice.
(BTW that is the one we chose and I went to Franciscan University too )

I agree with Mimi. The Latin American Spanish will be the one you benefit from the most in this half of the world.
My oldest started using the Rosetta Stone this winter right before our trip to Guatemala and out of all the other programs we've tried in years past; this one was the most interactive and useful one. We're going to keep going with it this summer.
I'm a spanish speaker and its not that easy to pass along unless you have plenty of practice. While I understand Spain Spanish perfectly, there are some different sounds that require getting used to. Especially the s sound in many words, like the vosotros, which almost is pronounced like a z.
All to say Latin American Spanish

I vote for Spain Spanish. Spanish is my first language, and I learned to speak in Latin America, then lived in Spain and then in South America again. The Spaniard pronunciation is so precise that your son will never misspell a single word. Latin American spelling is not intuitive because some sounds are pronounced identically. I think it is easier to learn Spain Spanish from the beginning.
Also, the "vosotros" conjugation may not be used everywhere, but it is understood everywhere. It sure made it easier for me to step into using the Argentine "vos" to have that knowledge. In Spain Spanish your son will learn the "vosotros" conjugation in addition to all the others, not instead of something else. The Latin American version will simply omit that form.

Thank you ladies. DS is a very intelligent young man, but SPELLING (english spelling)continues to be his biggest academic challenge. Taking this into consideration, would one or the other (Spain or Latin American) be easier to grasp?
Michelle's response inspired me to ask this question.
Thank you again!
Dana

either way.. Spanish is much easier to spell because you have way fewer exceptions to the rule for how to spell your sounds.

Can I give you an example?
Take the word "zapato" which means "shoe." Using the Latin American pronunciation, this word could be spelled either "sapato" (incorrect) or "zapato" (correct) because the "s" and the "z" sounds are pronounced identically before an "a," "o" or "u". Using the Spanish (from Spain) pronunciation this word could only be spelled "zapato" because the "za" combination is pronounced "th-ah." In Spain Spanish, if you hear an "s" sound then it is made by an "s." In Latin American Spanish the "s" sound can be made by a "c," "s" or "z."
I hope that helps. Ultimately, I am sure your son will do fine no matter what version you choose.

Thank you very much for the helpful responses! DH will be helping DS with Spanish. I'll let him read this and we'll make a decision from there.
God bless you all,
Dana
