Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Theresa's recent transcript question reminded me I have been pondering one too:

My oldest should technically be going into 9th grade next year according to her age. But we held her back in her very first year due to maturity issues and suspected dyslexia (I was RIGHT and no one would listen to me back then! ) MD had a very late cut off which my daughter was close to - so she will be the age of most other graduates around the country if we keep her where she is.

That being said, the dyslexia/ADHD/memory issues pose interesting questions and needs. She is smart but takes a long time to do work and has trouble with retention and working memory. I was thinking about using 5 years for high school - next year and the next 4.

Has anyone done this? Did you put it all on the transcript as 5 years? Did you do 5 years of work but kind of mush it all into the 4 year form? We are not sure a 4 year college is in her future but we want to give her every opportunity - to leave all doors open to whatever is best for her, so I want to make sure I'm not doing anything stupid now!

And an even more general question - I'd love to hear about anyone homeschooling a dyslexic through high school!

I took 4 1/2 years and put it in a 4 year transcript for ds. Basically putting the 9th grade requirements in the freshman year, and so forth. I started counting anything high schoolish in the 8th for the high school transcript.

HTH

ETA: For the dyslexia issues......books on tape, keeping math lesson small, hands on stuff, etc, and choosing subjects he was interested in. For example, one of his sciences was animal husbandry for horses, he worked with horses. I used a friends college text for the class.

Not dealing with dyslexia here, but I start counting high school level when it's high school level, regardless of grade. So my ds, whose birthday falls in October, will receive a credit in science (paleontology) and Latin I (hopefully by summer) technically in his 8th grade year, and I have a history booklist of high school level history that I'll probably end up sorting at the end. It's going to take him more than a year to do algebra I, so that's not an issue this year.

I have heard a couple of pieces of advice about how to handle high school level work completed prior to 9th grade. One is to just put it in 9th grade regardless of when it was completed. Or, something else that I have seen is to just group the courses according to subject instead of by year. I really prefer this second option myself, but since this is kid #1, I'm pretty much in the same place you are.

I conform our transcripts to look like a 4 year traditional course of study. I want the high schools and colleges that we deal with to look at it, get it, and move on. I avoid anything that would increase confusion or questioning on the part of those in school offices.

Love,
