Back in the day, when I was in high school, in order to take Calculus in 12th grade, we needed to complete Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry and Analytic Geometry (one semester of each), and College Algebra. The Trig/Analyt and College Algebra were taken concurrently in 11th grade - in other words, we had math 10 periods a week that year.
Now, though, I keep seeing a course called Pre-Calculus. Is that the same as my 11th grade 2 courses? Is it supposed to be accomplished in one year? Would you be doing the equivalent of 10 lessons a week in that one year?
Just wondering...
Peace,
Nancy

When I was in high school we had a 12 grade class called Math Analysis. I really never know what Math Analysis was, per say, it was just the next class to take.
When I was in college I had to take three trimesters of calculus. After that year, in hind site, I would say my Math Analysis class was everything we covered in that first year of Calculous with out any integration.
Could that be what they are not considering pre-calculous: everything thing but integration?

Ummm.. yeah, Jodie. That sounds like the math overload I had in 11th grade.
I think now, though, they tend to teach it as one course, as opposed to the 2 I took, because we had to do EVERYTHING by hand so it took much.much.longer. Weird though it may seem, I graduated high school the same year that pocket calculators were first marketed. Actually, in college we weren't allowed to use the calculators in physics classes because they had too many glitches in them still. "SlideRule Accuracy" was the standard for answering problems. Okay, I'll just lean on my cane and keep moving...
Peace,
Nancy

Something I took in 11th grade. Calculus in 12th.
Don't ask me to remember a single detail! I pray it all comes back when and if my children take these courses in high school. I think I was on an excelerated pace, though. I did take Calculus again in college, but again, do not remember very much.
Helping Emily with her Algebra has been delightful. For some reason I remember everything from Algebra. Geometry? Calculus? We'll see. :)
I do remember be able to use a calculator, Nancy.

My son is finding that Pre-Calculus covers the topics in his College Algebra class.
