Seems like these books take us two years each to do. This is for a very not mathy 10th grader (Geometry) and a very mathy 8th grader (Geometry). My 8th will get 3/4 done this year and my 10th just 1/2. I know I should just feel good with where they are at, but wondering if anyone else had this happen?

We took a detour this year from Jacobs Algebra into Life of Fred because the placement of his chapter on functions (ch. 2) screwed us up. Then my ds got hung up on the very difficult word problem ch. 4 of Fred over the holidays and now we're back in Jacobs. I am *hoping* we'll make it halfway through the book by the time we break in late May. Of course we'll work over the summer, but... yes, Algebra is going to take more than one year here. I'm using Kolbe's lesson plans and I am just hoping to make it to the end of the second quarter.

It sounds as if Geometry is the same?

For the record, I think if we hadn't switched to Fred and gotten hung up there, my ds would be farther along. But I think that would mean he was 3/4 of the way finished. He doesn't really *like* algebra, but he's a decent student.

My dd started Jacob's Algebra in 8th grade. She was about 2/3 of the way through 1/2 way through her 9th grade year when we switched back to MUS ( we had left it towards the end of pre-algebra). She then did all of MUS Algebra by end of June. So in our case it was taking us longer than a year to do the work.

My dd took about 15 months to work through Jacobs Algebra. Ds managed to get through Geometry a little bit more quickly, in one school year (about 9 months). I think it is fine to take a little longer than a year, even two years, especially if your children start a little younger. Also, they don't complete these books in school, either! So if you actually FINISH the book, you're ahead!

One thing we finally came to was continuing math over the summer, especially with the ones who were not particularly strong in math. One student would just forget everything over the 2 1/2 month break, so we stopped taking a summer break for math and would work at sort of half speed all summer, just to help the ones with
math struggles keep moving forward.

Feeling better! My dd will move onto Forester's after this as math is her strong suit but my ds will be going back to Math U See (and will be relieved!).

The proofs are what kill my son- so now he just does one a lesson and we work through it together....
