Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am interested in other moms opinions of the book Jacob Have I Loved by Katherine Paterson. It is a well written book; I read it as an adult and enjoyed it. However I have several problems with the book and would not let my daughter read it. My biggest problem with the book is that part of Louise's "coming of age" involves rejecting religion. Like most people who do not have a relationship with God, Louise is a miserable , angry person. So in that sense the book is fair to religion. But I think most child readers will not make that connection. Also, the most "enlightened" character in the book, the Captain, does not practice religion. Then there is the business of the Captain's strange "marriage of convenience".
I understand that Katherine Paterson is a serious Christian, and this book frequently shows up on recommended reading lists, even by homeschoolers. So maybe there is something about the book that I am missing. I am interested in the thoughts of other moms who have read the book. thanks!

I'm interested too - I read it so many years ago I don't remember it at all, but I keep seeing a preview for the movie at the start of one of my son's old BBC Narnia videos.

It would be interesting how they treat the concept of religion though - sometimes, admittedly, it needs to be rejected because it is NOT a true relationship with God - and to get away from all aspects of it, one can better come back to God. I AM NOT SUGGESTING THAT anyone leave! I'm just suggesting that sometimes a complete break allows one to return in a more appropriate manner - in desperate situations (ie where "religion" in one's upbringing is "toxic", it needs to be set aside so that one can actually find God).

If that is how it is treated in the book, I could handle that - but I don't remember!

:)
