I'm planning ahead...a great way to kill those February doldrums!
My dd is not a fan of historical fiction (sigh).
If you have a child like this (or if the above sentence describes you), please share what worked for you in 9th grade literature.
Thanks!

Nancy,
almost every book of literature is historical fiction...simply by being fiction and written in any given time period
That being said.....
if she has not yet read these:
any by Jane Austen
Wuthering Heights
anything by LM Montgomery (the non-Anne books are great, too)
anything by LM Alcott
Girl of the Limberlost
any Dickens
Johnny Tremain
Middlemarch
Wives and Daughters
Count of Monte Cristo
anything by Robert Louis Stevenson
Ivanhoe
The Princess and the Goblin
Knights of the Round Table by Howard Pyle (4 volumes)
a bit younger, but sweet:
Ella Enchanted (movie is stupid and wrong)
Boston Jane
my girls, 15 and 17 helped come up with this list

Good question, Chari. Also, what are your goals for her in literature study? Are you wanting to do character studies, plot analyses, or other literary analysis? Or just getting her reading a higher level of literature? Maybe you want works that lend themselves to discussion on more topics? If you could narrow down what you are planning to study with this dd, maybe you would get more "focused" suggestions.
Another thought is to do a poetry study. This is a different type of writing and some students really enjoy studying poetic devices and analyzing rhyme, meter, and meaning of poems. At least it's not historical fiction!

Marine biology...contemporary fiction...trivia books (Guiness, et. al.)...humor...
She did not like Johnny Tremain and even my photos of Green Gables House can't convince her to read the Anne books. No Little House, either.
She did like the Narnia books and early Betsy-Tacy (whew!).
No vampires or creepy stuff...another whew.
You can see my dilemma!

American? Or British? Or does it matter? Do you want some kind of theme/genre going on to link things together neatly at the end of a semester/year?

It doesn't matter, at least right now...I'm pretty good at putting themes together, but it's much harder to find titles she might enjoy, so I thought I would start there.

oh wow. A lot happened since I started contemplating this post. OK. Science fiction? Jules Verne?
One book that really affected me at this age was To Kill a Mockingbird.

Oooooh, and Chari got me thinking. We started a mini-unit on French (shhh! don't tell her) history using The Three Musketeers and The Scarlet Pimpernel as jumping-off points. Count of Monte Cristo seemed like too bold of a leap for my then 12 and 11 yobs.

How about.. Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass? What about other CS Lewis? What about Jack London? Jules Verne? Captains Courageous? other books about ocean voyages?
What about short stories? Mark Twain's The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County for instance. More story but being short it may be more attainable.

Maybe she would be intrigued by The Screwtape Letters or C.S. Lewis' science fiction trilogy (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, That Hideous Strength). My dd loved The Westing Game at that age; does she like mysteries? Another "literature" selection that is a mystery is Murder on the Orient Express.
What about Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit? Another idea is The Wind in the Willows.

Might she take to poetry or short stories, kind of as a little taste before/instead of doing novels? If she's not crazy about the genre, shorter things might be easier to get into/over with.
Peace,
Nancy

My dd has loved Ivanhoe and Rob Roy- bring in the Robin Hood (Roger Lancylen Green is great) and they all start to tie together. The Birth of Britain we are reading gives the facts of the times as well!

I used to teach 9th grade literature. One of our favorites was "A Separate Peace" by John Knowles.
