My ds wants to study medieval Asia this year. (As in China, India, Japan, Korea, as well as Russia and the Middle East, which is sort of fudging it a bit.) I have a few ideas, but as time is scarce and most standard booklists seem to stick with Europe, does anyone have any recommendations?
This is for an 8th/9th grader who is a very strong reader and especially interested in history.

I own a great (but possibly out of print) book called The Way of Tea - it is about the Japanese tea ceremony, but there is, of necessity, a lot about history, culture and art in the book as well.

Has he read The Samurai's Tale? It might be a bit young for him, but it is a great story.

What about Shogun by James Clavell? Although it is set in the 17th century, which is a bit late. You may want to pre-read it for appropriateness.

Gee Angela a tricky question
For Asian books I always check out the list at Homeschool Favourites. Some of these are modern so you will have to research the list. We bought some of the modern ones when we studied parts of Asia last year and were very happy with the quality.

How about checking out books at Chinasprout catalog?
There are a few books listed in Mainlesson under Asian civilizations.

Yep, he read that one last year and enjoyed it.
Thanks for the tips on where to look! I will be checking them out in the morning. And I'll come back and link anything I dig up.

Ok, I thought of a couple of other things.
I recently picked up some really old books at a used book sale. Among them were some books by Harold Lamb, including one called Genghis Khan: the Emperor of All Men, and one called The City and the Czar, which is about Peter the Great. Both of these would be in the right time period I think.
Now, I have not read these two yet, but I am currently reading another of the same author's books called Alexander of Macedon and it is really, really good. So I imagine if the others are comparable they are right up your son's alley.
You can read the text of Genghis Khan online here:Genghis Khan
There is a website devoted to Harold Lamb here:The Curved Sabre

Angel,
I saw your post on 4RL looking for books re Medieval Asia and remembered that one of my friend's sisters was a PhD in Medieval Studies. I asked what she would recommend and this is what she said. I hope it is helpful.
Wishing you the best in your new abode.

ISBN 9780306817397 'When Asia Was the World'
Not too in depth on any one topic, covers the period of 700-1500AD, the meat of the middle ages. Good reviews, excellent book.
Stewart Gordon
ISBN 9780609809648 'Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World'
Jack Weatherford
ISBN 9780307407160 'The Secret History of the Mongol Queens'
(follow up to the Genghis Khan book above, focus on the women) Jack Weatherford The first book is a really good starting place and provides an overview for the time period. None of these is written like a textbook, they're very approachable. They can all be found at Barnes and Noble in the history section, subcategory Asian History.
If you need more country-specific books, I can look up some things specifically for Medieval Japan/Korea/India, etc., whatever you need.
