Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My nearly 17yo has seriously bad handwriting. I've read about stealth dyslexia and I think he might have that but what do I do with that information? He doesn't have other problems that warrant intervention but he does need to be able to write legibly (and spell, but that's another post and seems to be improving slowly anyway).

Has anyone's child turned around their handwriting from here? He does lots of keyboarding but you can't do that for everything. If he filled in an employment form, for example, they would have to wonder about his standard of education because his writing looks illiterate. I hate to say it but it does.

I'm going to get him to write something out slowly because he insists it is because he is just writing for himself but I have done this before and there is very little improvement.

ARRGH.

Lovely to see you here 17 already!! Time flys.

I've taken all my children including teens back to handwriting practice, 17, 15 and 13 year olds included. Actually the 11 and 8 yr olds have better writing. Just using a basic course, daily practice and getting Dad to sign off. I'm too soft. Can't say it will work or not but I'm desperate.

Have you looked at Downunder Literature's program? A nice solid basic one.

I would second Erins suggestion.

We use A reason for Handwriting, but for a 12dd. Who wanted to improve her writing after seeing how lovely her friends handwriting was.

I've two boys who had/have horrid handwriting .
some people cannot mage handwriting , it actually can hurt thier hand . some use printing mostly or a form of italic.
I can say copywork was the #1 method which improved our now ds21 handwriting .
however that said , if he took anytime off what so ever from writing he would regress and I'm talking quickly ! within two weeks his handwriting would look like gr3 work .
For ds21 and ds22 when they were 10 & 11 I discovered Writing Can Help program . it is also catholic. both boys who are very different loved the program . I still have some pages left over for ds14 to use now.
ds14 writes very poorly he even mixes upper/lower case letters. It is difficult for children who struggle and learn subjects at a different rate then those in the ps . so I try for late readers to find books which are of a more mature subject but still very simply written .
For handwriting I feel the same way. ds14 will feel embarrassed if I give him gr.3 workbook type handwriting practice so I am planning this term to focus more on copywork from his poetry & practice of movement of his hand . We are going to focus on learning symbols , using different strokes etc. such as Egyptian , Japanese , caligraphy etc. both boys will do this activity as part of history so ds 14 will not even think of it as handwriting it will just appear part of history fun .
Mum's have to be inventive don't we it makes me think of like hiding the medicine in the icecream
keyboarding is a big issue . my niece who is also 21 can barely handwrite too and she went to public school thru highschool . I know myself when I stopped writing letters and began again my hand hurt ! we use muscles in there I'd never known until I did the handwriting , what a workout !
anywhooo that is what and how I have dealt with that issue . ds14 has had to start signing docs and things now so he is quite concious of his weakness in the area but he still does not shy away he does make the attempt to try
hope this helps some what
lov rox
