My son is going to be 16 in January. I do NOT really think I am ready to let him drive of course, but I did think I should start preparing him for his drivers courses and the tests he has to take etc. What do homeschoolers usually do for this these days? What are the laws concerning homeschoolers and getting their learners as far as an approved class. Can anyone offer any suggestions.

In our state you have to send your child to driver's ed/training at a state-approved driving school. Cost is hefty, almost $400.

Wow!!

In our country at the age of 16 you may sit for your Learner's Permit. This is a knowledge based test, the booklet is available prior to sitting for the test. You swot up and when you feel ready you head into your nearest RTA (Road Traffic Authority) office, pay and hopefully pass. When driving you have to display your L plates, (bright yellow with a black L)

In the state of NSW, the Learner driver has to do 120 hours of driving, including 20hours of night driving supervised by a holder of a 'black' (full) license. Usually this is a parent. You may only drive at 80km/h.

Once you have achieved this you may be tested by a driving test for your Ps. You can not go for your Ps until you have done at least 120 hours and be 17years. Ps are held for two years, a year of red Ps and a year of green Ps. Certain rules apply there to.

As a parent/instructor of a child who is currently up to 50 hours (incl 10 night hrs) I feel very confident that by the time my dd has completed 120hours she will be a fantastic driver. Dh and I have consciously placed her in a variety of situations and driving conditions. We have also ensured she drives both manual and automatic.

I never thought I would be the main teacher, but I have learnt alot about communication and about my dd. We have added a whole new dimension to our relationship

This is an interesting question, Kim, because where we are it doesn't matter if you are homeschooled, private schooled, or public schooled you have to find a private instruction program and take instruction through that. I would be curious about where there are states (or school districts) that still offer driver's education as part of the school offerings. I'm not sure there are any here that offer them as part of the curriculum for no charge. There are classes offered at the schools through the private companies after school, on weekends, and summers - outside students can register for some of those. There are also online options and home study options that qualify for us as well.

Since states vary widely and have their own driver's training requirements, it's best to find out what the state requires and then look for options locally. I know some states don't allow the home study options to meet the requirement for their state. We have always done a certified home program here then the 6 hour behind the wheel with an instructor. And as Nancy noted the prices can be hefty.

There are options which bypass that - but they involve not being able to get your permit and license until later ages.

I should add that you need 60 hours behind the wheel in addition to your 6 hours with the state-certified instructor before you can test for your conditional license. (I think this is a good thing, by the way - after 60 hours my son was a very confident driver.)
