Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have any ideas or books on putting together a portfolio for your high schooler?

Thanks

Lisa,

For what purpose is your portfolio? My three grads had to make one for graduation from Clonlara. Each one made (with Dad's help) an online portfolio. The last one was the best. There were links to samples of work done in math and science as well as a book list with comments and a wide variety of photos taken on areas of special interest (that daughter had a special interest in Japan), short papers, and links to things she found of interest which were not necessarily typically academic . She also had to do an exit exam and an exit essay which would be good to add if she were to present a portfolio of her work to people outside of Clonlara. I have never considered doing so since she has no need of it. I would also add a link to a transcript if she needed to do so.

How did we prepare for this? Samples of her work and a book list were kept or made. We also kept photos of things were of interest (like a museum display of Japanese clothing). I would have also assembled a transcript as we went along if we had not been enrolled in Clonlara.

HTH!

In Christ,

We have not had to do this, exactly, because we have a local umbrella school, but I do recommend photographing artworks, science experiements, field trips, projects, etc. because it is much easier to print out a few photos and create a professional-looking binder than it is to bundle the actual items into a useful display. (Ds had to create an Eagle Scout project binder and this is the approach Boy Scouts of America takes, too.)

We've tried hard to maintain our booklists each year - very important. Again, we've not had to provide them (yet) but we know that some colleges ask for them.

I think a good portfolio would also include volunteer activities, paid work, interesting hobbies/arts/pastimes and leadership opportunities. (Again, hat tip to BSA.) Flyers from events, photos of participation, certificates of appreciation, etc. would be part of this section. I'd also include any travel experiences here - not just exchange or work/study opportunities, but also family travel to other parts of the country, continent or world (national parks, cities, performances, etc.).
