A norton anthology. The Norton Anthology of world masterpieces vol. 2. Now - do we just read and discuss. It was my dh book from, well, 20 years ago. I will have to search around - wonder if I can find a study guide or something. . .

I really want to like the idea of using this book. But - I am not ready to make up my own course aroung it. I guess we will keep looking to see if there are lessons for it somewhere.

I have not seen any lesson plans built around the Norton Anthologies. We use them, but mainly as a compact source of reading material for my son.

True! Thanks. You are right, sometimes I feel unsure of myself but it just might be better to see where our own discussions lead then discussing questions from another source!
It is funny, when I came down holding this book - both dd and ds say suspiciously -"What are we going to do with that" -mind you this was not said in any excited way, rather a "oh my, now what" sort of way  ! I should have listened to my first response myself - I simply said - "read it!". And I was just wondering what ds should read next year - I think this will be part of the answer!

I've never heard of the Norton's Anthology and googled to find out what it is. The above site came up and it looks really good! Do the books read well? Are they engaging enough to interest 9th graders?

They're essentially just collections of literature, arranged around some theme. After years of grad school in English, I've got quite a library of them! English literature, modern poetry, the sonnet . . . you name it.
The anthologies are typically used as college texts -- at least, that's how I've always encountered them -- and aren't edited with the younger student in mind. The literature is typically presented with a brief introduction, and they aren't nearly as visual or as loaded with review-type stuff as your typical textbook would be. Mine are all very thick, with very small print.
I would think they'd be kind of heavy going for a 9th grader, unless you really picked and chose and excerpted selections. And how you used one would really depend on what your 9th-grade lit course was going to cover. If you wanted to use an "introduction to different genres" approach, you might prefer some other text as a spine. But if you wanted to do a survey of a particular era, say -- like classical lit -- then a "themed" anthology like a Norton could work.

I agree for a 9th grader - mine will be in 12th next year when I plan to use them. I also have planned some books not in the Anthology. I am thinking to at times be reading a book and at times the anthology. So I don't intend to read the whole thing! Just filling in what I feel he could use to be exposed to before going off to college.

Thank you! Sounds like we'd consider them in 12th or so if dd has an interest in a particular time period.

Thanks, I know that we can read and discuss without plans but - I do like something for days I don't want to think about what to discuss! I found on amazon a used teacher guide for cheap so I decided to get it - we will see what it has in it. So if I don't use the anthology no big deal - since it was a find. But at least we may read some of it.
