Gap Year Part II
She is planning on writing a third post on it.
HT to Harmony Art Mom who also has a link to this article about things to do during a gap year.
I would really like to see my dd taking a Gap Year so articles like these are interesting. Anybody else has some info to share on this?

That's interesting. I'm from Germany and when I went to school I had to complete 13 years in order to be able to attend a university. There is compulsory military service/or some social work equivalent in Germany for all young men. So all young men have a "forced" gap year. Many young women do some kind of social work or learn a trade before going to university. Many young men also learn a trade after their military service and then go on to university.

I haven't really talked to my dd about this yet, formally anyhow. But as the time passes and she doesn't seem to really know what she wants to do, it is looking as a great option. It will take the pressure of trying to make a decision. This is definitely something I am going to pursue farther. I found the comments to SWB's posts really helpful too. Don't miss them!

Eva,
It is interesting about how things work in Germany. Can the young men choose between military service of social work? What age is the average college freshman? I wonder the impact that this gap year has on college students. I mean, I wonder if you observed some of the effects SWB talks in her post: students being more mature, more centered, valuing more their education, etc.

If you take a gap year in the US, are you eligible for freshman scholarships?

Natalia,
Legally there is no real choice between military service and social work. You need to have a good religious or personal reason why you think you cannot use weapons or kill. You need to write your reasons in an essay and send it to the office that handles those cases. If your reasons are acceptable, you can do social work which is normally slightly longer than the military service. Most young men choose the military service.
The German university system differs a little bit from the American system. The average student is probably 20 by the time he begins to study at a university. We don't really have colleges, just universities, and you enroll for a degree in one subject (sometimes two or three if you want to become a teacher). We don't have a campus, most universities are in larger cities, and students live in their own apartments in that city. (There are a few dormitories, but life there is pretty much as independent as it is in an apartment and you have your own room -- no roommates.) You have a much bigger responsibility to organize your studies. When I started studying in 1989, 60 percent of the subject I was studying was not covered by seminars. You had to attend lectures or read on your own. There are fewer tests, but more big exams. The American college is more like our last two years of high school. Yes, I do think that students are much more mature than here. This is also due to the fact that drinking is not an issue. The legal drinking age for alcohol in Germany is 16 (except for hard liquor), and alcohol is not a big issue. Fewer students attend a university, though, because Germany has a very elaborate trade school system. So only people who want to become teachers, researchers, managers, professors, doctors, lawyers, architects, priests, and a few other professions attend university. It's more like grad school I would say. The downside with our system is that some degrees take a long time to finish and the student might be 30 by the time he's finished. All in all, the ones going to university really have a goal (I want to become a doctor, etc. ) and put a lot of effort into reaching that goal.

Eva,
The German systems reminds me of the system in the Dominican Republic where I am from. When you are admitted to the U. you are admitted to a particular major and there are no dorms so usually students live at home during their college career. Degrees usually last 5 years so there are somewhere in between a bachelor's and a master's.I guess our system is more European than I realized.

Maybe your system is based on the Spanish and French systems which are similar to the German system. The American system is closer to the British system, I believe. Did you go to university in the Dominican Republic?

I just read another interesting article about taking a gap year. It included a lot of links, so I thought I would bump this thread to post it here:
