I am pondering our 4 year plan for essays and writing. My dd is a strong writer and loves to write - but she needs to learn how to write a good essay. We are finding Seton English 9 to be an excellent program - she is doing a lot of writing including a Research Paper.
But as I think ahead I am wondering for future grades. Things I am contemplating:
- IEW Elegant Essay
- IEW High School Essay Intensive
- Seton English 10/11/12
Does anyone have any other recommendations?

We are going to be doing this when Andrew Pudewa comes to our Catholic homeschool conference this summer. He's doing the High School Essay Intensive the day before the conference.

Hi Marilyn
I always recommend The Lively Art of Writing by Lucile Payne. The students I have done it with in the past have said it helped them prepare for college writing more than any other thing they did in HS. (Results may vary!!  )
It is old-fashioned with outdated examples, but the writing instruction is wonderful. You could do it in one semester or stretch it our over a year with lots of writing in other subjects in between. I'm using it now with an 11th grader and we are also using Writing Workshop by Roper and The Office of Assertion by Crider (these last two are written by UD professors and are probably intended for college, but we are getting a lot out of them).

Donna,
I just ordered the Essay and Research paper aids. I did wonder about the grammar lessons. We really struggle with grammar around here with the boys (and spelling!) and I wondered what those programs were like? I was unable to download a sample page because my computer is so old!

We used Jensen's Format Writing. Very helpful for all kinds of expository writing.

Marilyn, if you want someONE to help you ... maybe you could check into Write Guide ... where you'd get a tutor for a relatively low cost and you can dictate the assignments your daughter is given. I worked for them for a year or so a few years back and had the spectrum of assignments from the kids (most of whom were homeschooled, but also public/private high school kids whose parents wanted them to have more writing help). Write Guide is a great option ... and it really isn't very expensive when compared to Pudewa's costs ....

I'm not Margot, and I do hope she chimes in!
We used The Lively Art of Writing this past year (my daughter's 10th grade year) and she really enjoyed reading it. I just assigned it as reading for the year. It's written in a very living way; quite enjoyable to read. My dd said that the ideas shared in that book really helped her in thinking about her writing. I did not structure the book as a formal writing course, but I do wish I had done more with it now; the book does lend itself well to that possibility if you wanted to do that.
There are 15 short, easy to read, well-written chapters, and each chapter wraps up with some questions, assignments (writing), and vocabulary. We completed most of the questions in an oral conversational/discussion way. The questions review and the assignment at the end of the chapter will ask the student to write based on what they've learned and read in that chapter. Each chapter builds on the other, and walks the student slowly through the process of thinking about and writing an essay.
It works well as a high school writing course - with its 15 chapters, the reading, discussion and writing could easily be completed in a full 30-36 week year, taking 2 weeks to read, discuss and write from each chapter. The author writes clearly and in an engaging way; I would certainly consider it one of our living language arts resources. It provides a fair amount of hand holding in that the assignments are clearly provided for you, and if you're willing to offer your attentiveness in assigning, requiring and reading the results, I think they work well in a home setting. But if you feel inadequate or intimidated in giving feedback on your child's writing (which, I know you don't, Erin, but in general for anyone else reading this), and need a lot of hand-holding in fostering high school writing, this may not be the resource for you.
It's an inexpensive little book with some very good content, and is definitely a worthwhile addition to the shelves here.

Hm, I've heard of that, and it does sound good. I'll have to add it to my list. For 9th, my son is going to work his way through Jensen's: basic, and not very "living," but gets the job done in terms of thinking about structure and *kinds* of writing. I like that it begins at the sentence level and works out -- that intuitively seems right to me. I just adapt the assignments so that he's always writing about something he's studying (as opposed to random topics), either of my choice or his.
Lively Art would make a great follow-up.
He'll do one lesson a week from Jensen's Grammar, which will probably last us through high school. Again, it's basic but very thorough and easy to schedule.
