How much time does your homeschooled highschooler, particularly boy, spend just 'hanging out' with peers? Not scheduled events/meetings, but just hanging out either at your house, or elsewhere, and talking, etc...

M 15 year old spends couple of evenings a week and usually 2 Saturday afternoons a month just "hanging out" We are blessed to live in a rural neighborhood with 8 (YES 8!) homeschool families, several with teen boys. Our boys ride bikes, go creeking, build forts, have air soft wars, whatever. They also camp in our backyards a lot in nicer weather.

Rare. We live far from friends but am glad it is this way. They seem to find trouble when they don't have something productive to do. Been through 1 girl and 2 teen boys so far.

Well altho both my teen boys are social, my 14 yr old far exceeds my 13 yr old in needing this outlet.
They hang out with friends approx 2-3 times a week, 2 of those times are in between activities for an hour+. The other time is completely without agenda for the fun of it. All of it is presuming his academics is done well.
My oldest never shuts down. He is always on the go and wanting to do things. Giving him a positive outlet that he enjoys is a madatory neccessity to both our sanity.

Very rarely.....until they drive and are more on their own, and then it is maybe 1 evening a week.

Rarely here too as there are no Catholic teens that we know of close by and we live very rurally, so that limits us quite a bit. My older boys, 18 and 14, are very, very close. I am grateful now that there wasn't the option of hanging with other guys, as nice as it would have been, because it is a great joy to me to have them so close.
Several times a year though, they will travel back to our home state and stay with very dear friends who have teen boys their age. They spend the week just hanging out and it seems to give them enough peer time to make it through 3-4 months before needing it again. I'm very grateful for the opportunity when we're able to coordinate it with our friends. These guys have been buddies since they were preschoolers.

Not much. Their 'hanging out' time is pretty much after a structured activity. Most of our friends are spread out a little so just hanging out doesn't happen often for most of them. The school year is so busy. I guess they do get to just hang out a little in the summer. But all the parents are great at supervising and planning at least some direction in activities.

My teens' "hang-out time" is also whatever can be squeezed in before or after other structured activities with their friends. It seems to be plenty enough, however, and they truly enjoy the structured activities.

We have a long day at church every Thursday: that's when our parish's Latin Mass is, followed by Latin classes, and then a long block of time until Holy Hour at 6. We're friends with a family who drive an hour to come to our parish, and they don't go home between the end of classes and Holy Hour; they just bring food and schoolwork and play stuff and make an afternoon of it. So we've started staying, too, even though we live near the church, and that's our big weekly social time now. My teenager gets in a lot of her hangout time with the two sisters who are her good friends then, and also on Sundays after Mass. And we try to have family afternoons fairly often, so that all of us get hangout time, but generally we can count on one several-hour block a week.

Sorry, that was a teenage girl answer, not boy! But my next one's almost a teenager, and he gets the same deal, with the teenaged brothers of the girls who are my daughter's friends.
