Briefly, my third son is interested in volunteering a year of service with a religious community. (He will be 18 in June). We thought for sure it was to be the Knights of the Holy Eucharist (EWTN brothers). But their focus has changed. They really only accept young men who "know" they have a vocation. My son is discerning, but will most likely attend college first before deciding.
My son works at a small motor shop, repairing lawn mowers, etc. in the summer. During school, he works at a web design company. He is also open to cooking, etc.
The bottom line is that he is searching for a stricter community or group. He does want to participate in religious activities (adoration, daily Mass, etc.) Any suggestions, anyone??

A good friend of mine works with the Community of Saint John and I know they have a one year service program for young people as I have housed them when they have traveled through our area.
This is the order Fr. Antoine (Bringing Adoration to Children) is part of.

Oh, yes...I should have mentioned that. My son has done retreats with the community, but at this time, they don't have a volunteer program for the guys. I guess there wasn't enough interest. But I am checking to see if this has changed any.
If this doesn't work out.....any more suggestions?

I don't know where you are located but in Texas there is a wonderful new community called the Mission of Divine Mercy which has a program for young men called the St. Gabriel's institute. They volunteer for a semester and live with the priests and brother and are included in the daily life. They have daily Mass and adoration. They are very conservative using the Latin Novus Ordo at present. They don't have any info on their website about the program but you can call or email Fr. John Mary Foster. There is a link on the page for a contact. Just thought I would throw the idea out to you. It may be way too far for you.

Distance is not an issue. Peter assures me, "I will travel! :)" Seriously though, he will miss his 2 year-old brother very much....but he is ready for a semester or year of discernment. He brought it up the moment he came back from the Community of St. John's Eagle Eye retreat last summer. I just discounted it because I think he was emotionally overwhelmed with the experience. But....it has come up again and after prayer, I think this is what he is suppose to do.
Thanks! I'll still take any more suggestions in case something doesn't work out.

We also do a lot with the Legionaries of Christ. The founder of the order has had many personal struggles, but the priest and brothers we know are wonderful dynamic men. They have a chapter house in Edgerton WI. My 15 year old is very involved with the Conquest group here.

soaringforwisdom.com is the Community of St John web site. They only have girls this year (no men signed up for the year long commitment), but there's always next year....They start their year in late Aug/early Sep

Hey, Paula....no hijacking allowed 
Seriously though, I just spoke to Father Nathan and indeed they may have 2 guys, at least, interested for the coming fall. Peter will visit there for 3-4 days sometime in the next month or so to decide. We will keep our avenues open though and investigate the options mentioned. I know they have 8 girls now with the sisters, so that is nearly always a possibility with that community.

There is Madonna House in Canada. I don't know much about it but talked to a young woman who spent a month there. She liked it. It is for men and women.

You have to be 18 to go to Madonna House, but that would also be a GREAT community to live at. They like people to commit to at least a year there.
I have two friends who have lived there for more than 15 years. I love the fact that they have both "lungs" of the church on their "campus".
There are two men living at the Community of St John brothers right now for a month or two just to help with maintenance things. Also a girl from South America that isn't 18 yet, but has finished her studies is living at the Sisters guest house. It's really a vibrant place to visit. My children love to go out there. The sisters continue to do Adoration for children twice a month. My children ask to visit there for Mass and don't seem to mind the hour long daily Mass.
I hope you get a chance to come out here and visit the CSJ too. Blessings!
