Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Are there any high schools out there in any diocese where homeschoolers are allowed to play sports on the varsity high school teams?
Anyone?

We live in the Pittsburgh Diocese and we just tried to get my 8th grade son on a team. We started at our Parish and then went up through the Diocese. The Diocese said, "No way." Their reasoning is that even though we homeschool, we are still under the authority of the local school district. This would apply to high school also. Our kids are allowed to play for the public school teams and my older son does but I was hoping that my younger son could play on the Catholic school team where he knows more boys.

Hmmm..but what if the public schools say that we are under the diocese because we are Catholic homechoolers? We can't play in the public schools in VA. It's against the VHSL policy. We're definitely not under the authority of the local school district since we homeschool under the Religious Exemption provision.

Not trying to be pessimistic, but I would be surprised if you find one Elizabeth. For a couple of reasons:

1. Catholic schools belong to leagues who usually require a player to take a minimum of four or five classes.

2. A homeschooler might take a spot on the team from a student who pays tuition. You might argue that you give money to your parish, so that should give you some right. But even if the school is diocesan and receives some funds from the diocese, it's not even close to covering costs.

3. The Catholic school itself in the effort to make sure academics come before sports usually have their own rules about the number of classes a student should be taking and the grades that the child needs to be a student athlete.

And those rules aren't to discriminate homeschooling! That's just so they can run their school well. Seton isn't diocesan (just affiliated) and I know homeschoolers can't play on our varsity teams.

And as you pointed out -- in Virginia, it's against VHSL policy. But I didn't think about your religious exemption status.

sarah's good...

Hmmm... I would think it would depend upon their leagues. For example, three of the Arlington Diocese schools are in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. (I don't know about JP the Great.) Don't know those rules.... but they all three belong to the Virginia Independent Schools Association for state play. So does Seton. I'm pretty sure for VISA a student has to have full time status. For Seton, that's five classes. Not sure what it is in the diocesan schools.

Okay, so the three diocesan schools are VISAA members. One of the student eligibility rules is:

Quote:
The student shall be a regular bona fide student in good standing o f the school that he or she represents. For purposes of hereof, the term "regular bona fide student" shall mean a full-time student taking at least an average of four hours of classes per day at the school that he or she represents. For purposes hereof, the term "school" shall mean a private, preparatory, parochial or other nonpublic school that is accredited by an accrediting agency approved by the Virginia Counsel for Private Education and that does not derive its financial support from state or local taxes.

I can't find WCAC rules online anywhere, but I'm sure they have something similar. Maybe someone in your house can google better than me.

HTH!

Dear Elizabeth,

Thanks for exploring this...I am wondering if there are any other local moms out there who would like to contact our state rep and have a meeting with her...is Vivian Watts your delegate. I really feel that the public schools should at least be open to us for try-outs...I am not asking for special consideration...if my kid can't make the team, then he shouldn't be on it...I just want a level playing field for him to be able to try out...

My son is interested in pursuing diving...and outside of school...it is VERY expensive.

Fairfax County is getting my money in taxes...there should be some benefit for that...or they should give me a tax break.

Peace to your day,

Sara Beatty

Maryan,
I found this at the VISAA site, under Eligibility:

Section 7 – Home School Students. Home school students are not eligible for VISAA Events.

Sounds pretty straightforward.

Sara, that sounds like a good plan. We're in Loudoun and we pursued it two sessions ago but it died in committee at the General Assembly. We'd be willing to give it another try.

A search of HSLDA's website came up with a couple good pages on equal access:

http://www.hslda.org/docs/nche/issues/e/equal_access.asp

If you do a search on HSLDA's site for "sports", there are many more pages that come up. Good luck.

edited to add "sports" above...sorry, I wrote that on the fly and didn't check before posting!

Elizabeth, my dd's former dance teacher had a dd who played on a Christian high school basketball team. I'll have to check with someone with which one particularly. I think they were out in Woodbridge. She ended up with a 4yr scholarship to GMU actually. She isn't there anymore, very LONG story. But anyways...I'll see if I heard that story correctly about the Christian school (and I'm pretty sure she didn't take any classes there???)

I know in Denver, the Christian schools had homeschooled students playing for them ... Mary M, did any play at Machebeuf?

It does seem ridiculous ... especially if it's a diocesan school as we help (in time, talent AND treasure!) to build up diocesan and private Catholic schools ...

it has to do with enrollment.
otherwise, drop-outs up to age 19 could be "recruited" for a basketball team, or something, and just be called "homeschooled".
In IL, we have no standards, or requirements to homeschool. we do not notify a superintendent, etc.
therefore we are totally off the grid, and not in the system to be able to participate in IHSA, which is the governing body for IL school sports.
For awhile, our local Catholic High School allowed homeschoolers to enroll for a minimum of 2 classes, to participate in sports, but then changed their mind.
they did not want to be responsible for keeping track of/monitoring grades for academics which they were not providing, nor did they want to send the message that they would "bend rules" , for sports, which are treated very much like a priveledge, and not a right.
The school kids grades were checked and posted weekly to be eligible to play.
however, I thought, when I looked into this a few years ago, that in states where one was required to take standardized test, etc., provisions had to be made to include homeschoolers, at least in the public schools?

Last year I joined a Christian School, it is grades K - 12 plus a homeschool division. It is really great because they do not require us to use any particular curriculum, but my son can play on their high school sport teams, participate in their music programs, and join any of their clubs if we so desire. It is working very well. Here in California, the schools belong to CIF and the private schools can play against the public schools. They decide the divisions based on the amount of students in the school. I feel very blessed to have this opportunity for my son.

God Bless

None here in MI, that I am aware of.

Our k-8 grade Catholic schools do, as long as you are a parish member or member of a "sister" parish that doesn't have a school. The k-8 is run under CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) rules, but the high schools are under the Catholic High School League, which follows the guidelines (for participation purposes with non-Catholic high schools) of the MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association.) The MHSAA requires enrollment in the school for which the student athlete plays.

Not much help here.

God Bless,

I know one of the candidates for Governor in VA this year is interested in changing this law wrt public schools. My children are not old enough to be affected by this yet but I am watching what the legislature does very closely since my son is a soccer player.

JP the Great has been very open to the homeschool community so far but I imagine no matter how open they'd like to be they are bound by league rules.

It's a shame there isn't a competitive hs option for all sports like there is for football.

There is an hs option for competitive sports! For those of you in NoVA there is the Fairfax Homeschool Sports Association. I know of a mom whose son has received a full scholarship after playing on their football team. They have several sports, boys and girls. They play area schools, including Seton and JP and some Christian schools (and I think there is even a public school or two on some of their schedules). We haven't done anything with them personally yet, but like I said, I have friends who have and have only good things to say!

Oh and another friend of mine, who lurks around here , has told me there is a Loudoun team, I think they are the Lions. But I'm not sure that they have anything other than football. Not totally sure, but something else to google!

Sara,
I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but have you looked into The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) for diving?

My ds played AAU basketball from 7-10th grade, and only stopped due to a shoulder injury. The play was VERY competitive. They played many teams from around our metro area, the state, and even traveled to Houston, Cocoa Beach and Las Vegas for tournaments. Many of the boys on his AAU team and the others we played on a regular basis are now going on to play in college (they did go to public/private high schools, though.) But that was the level of competition, available. And I enjoyed a lot of those games more than the high school games.

There are many sports that can be played through AAU. On the main site, click the tab on the left that says "sports" and it will give you a long list.

For other sports, I would check out the home school sports teams in your area. Many in our group are playing football and basketball. For those that like hockey, there are many club teams around.

I hope this helps.

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

Weeeeelll, you could move to Minnesota....Catholic and public schools are in the same leagues and homeschoolers are eligible.

ETA....or the child could live in MN...with people you know...

Wow Kacky - I had never heard of this organization - awesome. My soccer and baseball players will be happy that there is an alternative for them to high school.
