Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have recommendations for a high school course in apologetics? The Fr. Laux series might work for some, but his verbiage is a bit above the heads of my teens.

Thanks,

Tina,

I used Elizabeth's Transition Trails curriculum and found it very good for apologetics. I do not know if she still sells it.

What are you looking for? Kolbe just revised their 11th and 12 th grade years. Their 11th grade Theology is called Apologetics/Church History II. I have just gone through it with a fine comb planning for my dd. It is very, very excellent. I just asked about what you are looking for because this uses Laux just a little - but mostly church documents, CCC and a collection of early church fathers and saints. The history of controversies and such goes right along with it. There are plenty of paper topics, 4 tests (if you want something like that) and lots of really good primary reading. It does address papacy, Mary and the Eucharist - but it doesn't go into answering every single objection like - Why do you worship statues kind of stuff or How to answer Mormons. I liked it because it focused strictly on the beauty of our faith without any defensiveness but with a depth and thoroughness that left me wanting to do that course and the 12th grade Theology course (Morality and Church History III)myself. I just cannot say enough about how good this course looks to me - both of them really.

I know you can sign up for single courses - and get the lesson plans without getting their services or you can pay more and have an advisor but really just having those plans is all you'd need.

Here are some additional resources:

The Beginning Apologetics Series by San Juan Catholic Seminars would be a good resource set throughout the high school years. The two-sided apologetics bible page is incredible…packed full of apologetics questions and biblical references…it’s concise, yet quite comprehensive…great to fold and keep tucked inside your bible.

“Philadelphia Catholic in King James’ Court” is a novel that focuses on apologetics. Combined with the available study guide (referred to lower on the page listed above), this would make an excellent complement to any apologetics study.

“Following Christ in the World”, by Anne W. Carroll, pub. By Seton Press, is another good resource. From Emmanuel’s description; “An excellent senior high school apologetics text covering traditional topics, as well as issues pertinent to the modern world. Topics such as Philosophy, God, Jesus, The Pope, The Church, and current social issues like Planned Parenthood and Capital Punishment.”

MODG provides a syllabus for 12th grade religion (also available through Emmanuel Books), which employs "Following Christ in the World", along with “Surprised by Truth”, by Patrick Madrid and the encyclicals Rerum Novarum, Aeterni Patris and Humani Vitae. We will be using this for the first time this year. I've been impressed by the focus, especially additional comments in the syllabus, as well as the content of FCitW that I've read thus far.
