Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd, rising 9th grader, finish Algebra I this year. Part of me says to go to Algebra II now that's on her mind still (so to speak). However, when I went to school (how many times have I said that one?!) after Algebra I went to Geometry and then Algebra II.

I know this is the beauty of homeschooling. But I thought I'd check and see who else has gone from I to II, then Geometry and then PreCal...how did go?

We are doing algebra 2 next (did alg 1 this year). It is actually what I did in school and makes more sense to me.

Honestly, my dd spent 3 years doing algebra 1, 2, and College Algebra (at community college) and is just now getting to Geometry as senior. All this algebra wasn't the original plan but it sure has helped to move at her pace and have the algebra fresh for the SATs.

Love,

My three older boys did the regular math sequence: Alg. 1, Geo, Alg 2. All 3 are either math minors or majors in college. That said, they don't think geometry ever totally clicked until they took calculus. Their lowest scores on the math ACT was in geometry.

I am going to try Algebra 1, then Algebra 2 (but only 1/2 of it) before doing geometry with my daughter. Math teachers and professors have since told me that a tough geometry course needs maturity. And for this daughter ANY geometry course is going to be tough (Sort of reminds me of starting grammar too early. It is just not developmentally the best way for a child to spend his time). Then we'll do geometry for 4 days and one day finishing the Algebra 2 text. This way algebra will be somewhat fresh for the ACT.

This is ONLY a plan. We haven't done it yet, but I am always willing to try another guinea pig approach :)

Blessings,
Stephanie

With Catie, she did Algebra 1 and then Algebra 2 -- she used Saxon and was able to test out of Geometry after Algebra 2 (she got a 100% on the placement test) ... then she did Honors Pre-calc and then Calculus ... but she's a nerd!

Fwiw, I think the reason many take geometry in the sophomore year is because geometry is on the SAT's and there is concern that juniors don't get enough geometry exposure for the tests if they wait till their junior year to take it. But if she has completed Alg 1 in the 8th grade, then you'd be safe either way.
