As my oldest son reaches 9th grade next fall, I'm starting to panic. Not about whether to continue homeschooling, but about needing an "official transcript". Is it necessary for college bound students? Can I just keep my own records and make my own transcript and get them into the college they want?
We're planning on having our son take community college courses in 12th grade and maybe 11th grade as well. Also doing lots and lots of SAT and ACT prep. Is doing all this and getting a GED enough? What kind of records should I keep?
Help!

We are enrolled with MODG and they will provide our transcript, but I am just chiming in to second your idea about community college. My 15 y.o. dd just finished an advanced Biology course at our local community college and it was a wonderful experience for her. She had a terrific teacher and she worked very hard. She received double credit for her MODG transcript (which means her one semester will count as two) and she received an A. This kind of limited outside-the-home classes speak volumes to collge Admissions about how a particular homeschooler can perform in a college setting. I think its a good idea.

from my experience, a lot will depend on the college they want to attend. Does he have any in mind? Contact them and find out their admission requirements.
It seems some areas of the country prefer ACT, others SAT. My daughter didn't need a GED, and so didn't do that at all. She also didn't take the SAT (but did take the PSAT and the ACT.)
Benedictine accepted my homemade transcripts, all I needed to do was list her courses, grades, and overall GPA. She did have some Community College classes, plus PS credit in Chem and Band, which helped to "back up" the grades I had given her (in my mind, at least.)
I was worried when I had to do it the first time. I am so very not worried about it now. I spent way too much time and energy stressing for something that turned out to be pretty painless and relatively simple.
Again - I think a LOT depends on the college your child picks. I am sure there are many that are much, much harder and/or more particular. But my daughter really wanted to go to Benedictine, and they happen to be very homeschool friendly.

Not that we have anyone in college yet , but from everything I've read & researched, you do NOT need an "official" transcript. The admissions director at Christendom College told me that SAT scores are very important to all schools & if a student has high SAT scores, then he will be given alot of leeway in terms of a transcript.
The only time that an official transcript is necessary, as far as I can tell, is when applying to a military academy, the military itself or a civil service job, however, a GED will also do.

Cafi Cohen has a few really good books on this subject. The biggest things include:
1. Keeping track of all books read, subjects studied, outside classes and activities starting in 8TH GRADE (since many homeschoolers are ahead of the game). She also recommends starting to amass sealed letters of recommendation at this time as your child participates in different programs where the teacher gets to know him/her well.
2. Talking to specific colleges being considered to find out what they require. Some want a transcript with credit hours listed. Some are fine with just book lists. Some want a copy of a diploma (even if it is home-made on the computer).
