Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My son is a pessimist. This does not bode well, I am discovering, for his upcoming SAT (first try). We've been practicing and studying vocab, but when he does a practice test section he starts worrying about failing and just spirals down from there.

I have trouble relating to this as 1)I didn't worry about "failing" the SAT - I kind of like taking standardized tests - and 2)I've always been self-motivated to prepare, study, do my best, stay positive, etc.

Does anyone else have a "glass half empty" teen? How did you motivate him/her for standardized tests? College applications?

(Can you tell I'm dreading next year, and all those college essays?)

Many thanks.

Hi Nancy,

I came across a wonderful book called The Motivation Breakthrough by Richard Lavoie. It begins with a quiz that helps you to identify six different motivational styles. It then presents techniques and stategies to help you to inspire your child to succeed.

It is a very well organized book and I have already written a lot of notes in my copy.
