This does look very cool.
The benefit for me is that by the time Thomas is ready for hs (7 years from now) they should have all the kinks worked out and I'll be able to go right into this with him

This does look wonderful. Kevin (12) just told me the other day that he doesn't want to go to college. He wants to learn a trade. This is kind of funny because he is an intellectual like my father and brother.
A high school plan like this might enable him to explore his options more thoughtfully. I'm all for learning a trade, I just want to make sure he isn't saying that to avoid writing college papers. 
I guess I shouldn't pigeon hole. One can be an intellectual plumber. Sigh. I'm starting to worry dreadfully over guiding these children into adulthood.

Thanks, Elizabeth! I had Devin read the CHC webpage over my shoulder and she said, "I think that it looks very interesting. I like the range of electives that they have. It seems like the people who are putting it together are rightly ordered, knowing that going to college isn't everyone's calling."
I'm wondering if this will give me, dh Dave, and Devin, a place to come together with all our strengths and weaknesses in a productive way. We have no interest in a prepackaged hs program but we also don't want to reinvent the wheel. We're open to her going to college but aren't locked into it. I'm looking for ways to help Devin to discern God's will for her and can see the potential for having a "neutral" someone/thing in the mix.

Our family is praying for a fix it guy! Seriously! Some of the smartest people I have known have been people of common sense and hard working hands. Oh how I miss my mensa smart car mechanic from Fresno, CA, for example!
My concern (dread, anxiety, joy, wonder, responsibility...) rests in helping to discern God's will for each child. In theory I want to encourage Devin to discern God's will for herself. In reality I have moments of struggle because Devin isn't clear on or committed to a particular path.
Drat. I knew that I was going to college as soon as I heard about college! (I wanted to go for all the wrong reasons but that is another story .)
The one thing Devin is clear on is that she wants to be home for high school. Can someone remind me to be patient and trusting of God and Devin? Thanks

You'll do wonderfully. I know you will.
If your dd is wanting to stay home through high school, you're starting out on the right foot already...both of you. 
My 12 yr old Garrett also wants to stay home...I think through college.
This (from their course description) fits my guy perfectly:
* you are seeking coursework that can be modified for students who struggle with academics but shine in practical skills and are happy to make suggested modifications
We love CHC already and I need to plan now for Garrett (he's doing 6 1/2-7th grade work already). The older two are too far gone for me to change plans now.
I was wondering if they gave the "diploma". I assume no. This is what I found regarding it:
* you would prefer greater flexibility in presentation, including the option of an experiential, rather than textbook, approach you would be happy with alternate means of demonstrating mastery and completion of high school work that may or may not necessitate a diploma(While High School of Your Dreams does offer various means of earning a diploma for those who wish, diplomas are no longer routinely required for admission to institutions of higher learning. Colleges have learned that homeschoolers generally achieve at a higher level than most public-schooled students and therefore welcome students who offer alternate proofs of accomplishment.)

Students who prefer to do so may earn an accredited diploma, using CHC's High School of Your Dreams, under the 'umbrella' of Clonlara School, or North Atlantic Regional High School. High School of Your Dreams' required subjects for high school graduation match Clonlara requirements. North Atlantic Regional High School's course requirements differ slightly but, since they require significantly fewer hours and credits, utilizing High School of Your Dreams' program to earn NARHS's diploma is equally simple. Both Clonlara and North Atlantic Regional High School are completely compatible with the format, freedoms, and flexibility afforded by High School of Your Dreams, but with diploma added.
For students who wish to earn a diploma from Clonlara or NARHS, these organizations do charge an annual fee, and a have a few additional requirements including portfolios and documentation of hours earned through High School of Your Dreams. I'm going to take my best guess at this...it depends on the college. Of colleges that require a diploma (not all do) some will notice where the diploma comes from and some will not. The ones that don't notice will be the ones that are just "checking off" the little box in the application file that says "diploma." But some will know the difference between the different schools and their philosophies. Clonlara is definitely connected to alternative learning and unschooling. I suppose this could work for or against a student, depending on the college's perspective.
On a personal note, I worked with Clonlara the first year I moved to PA (2001) when I quickly needed community to protect my right to hs. I can't say enough about Pat Montgomery and what she did for our family. When the local school district supervisor wanted to "meet me" (although I wasn't required to by law) I refused. His office staff called and were perplexed. I referred them to Clonlara and Pat, herself, talked to them and the supervisor...on 3 occasions! She also talked with me, holding my hand a bit, until I could get my feet on the ground in PA after being fee as a bird in NV.

Our carpenter was ABD (all but dissertation) in philosophy when he decided to quit work on his Ph.D. I asked him if he thinks about philosophy when he is drywalling. He laughed and said "No way!" But, truly, he is very smart and interesting to chat with. Now he is a stay at home dad and does carpentry work.

Angie,
My daughter, Stevie, received a diploma through MODG last June (2004). She had done some training at the American Cancer Society office while finishing her senior year, as well as working at a local animal hospital. She was very unsure of her future....as far as continuing her education. She didn't think she wanted to go to college, not then anyway. She was sure, however, that she wanted to get married and have a family. Even today she is very sure of that....and is waiting patiently for the right man. She is now working at a local bank and will begin taking classes that the bank will pay for  . I think she was afraid to commit to college and the financial burden that it would put on her when her heart was saying she wanted to be a stay at home mom.
I know she has prayed continously about what God's will is, and I believe she is following it.
I used to worry that she didn't want to go to college.....now, I don't. She really is trying to follow God's will.
Take comfort in knowing that our children are being led by a God who loves them very much  .

Donna, your experience with Stevie is a beautiful example of prayer and trust. Thanks so much.
Dh and I find ourselves wanting to share truth and reality as best as we can with Devin about what she is doing now and how it may affect her future. Because of our experiences and faith, we can't simply say "Go to College!" I think that perhaps my parent's generation was the last who could get away with that .

Wow! I had heard about this, but was wondering what it would be like. While I'm still wondering, it's looking very good for my upcoming high schooler, and our daughter who is starting 6th grade next year.
