There is a lot of controversy about GPA scores in our county and state right now. How do homeschoolers get a GPA? Especially if the parent does the transcript(Sorry for my ignorance - I went to high school in Europe)

GPA isn't hard - basically it is an average of all the academic grades in high school. Usually there is some sort of point scale. So, for instance, 4 is an A, 3 is a B, etc. Some schools now have differing scales to acknowledge more difficult classwork. I simply don't go there, though I think my children have done advanced work. We simply have a transcript that doesn't designate honors or non-honors and uses a straight 4 point scale. If explanations were needed in terms of the rigor of the courseload, then you could attach a booklist, reading list.
I may be hopelessly behind the times as I sometimes feel as if we have been so far removed from the system for so long that I don't know what they do anymore.
Class rank is the one that is impossible to fill in. We leave that blank or put N/A on it.

I just added up all the scores they got in the subjects like math, science, languages and English. Then I would have a grade for each class. So for example my present 8th grader gets between 92 and 99 percent on his math throughout the year. That would be an A.
Here is an example from Donna Young's website on how to do a High School GPA
With the classes like literature and history that are mostly reading with writing and discussion components, I have a harder time grading objectively. I usually have a sort of "points per..." system for these types of classes. If I estimate a given book will take 2 weeks of class time, for example, then that book would count for about 5 % of the grade because that is 10 days out of 180. I factor in a bit for attitude -- that is, a child that is reading slowly but seems to be delving into the material and getting something out of it (as judged by discussions and writings and so on) might get a higher grade than one who seems to be doing the minimum just to get by.
This system helps me feel I'm being realistic about what's expected at a high school level while still preserving the independent structure of our homeschool.
Like Janet, I use a simple 4 scale -- 4 is A, 3 B and so on. I simply add up the grades and average them out to get a GPA. I don't give extra credit for advanced work even though what the kids do in our homeschool is probably honors-level type work. If a child had done poorly in a home class, I would probably offer him a chance to "make it up" by doing extra reading or projects during the summer.
Probably way more than you were asking!

I second this recommendation. I've spent some time clicking around the site and have even used the transcript form as a model to follow ... with a little tweaking.

Thank you Janet, Willa and Donna for your explanations and the links. I really appreciate it - I still have a couple of years before I have to worry about it, but I like to be prepared!

We use HomeschoolReporting.com -- here's the link -- which is a total record-keeping system (attendance, grades, portfolio, very basic lesson planner) which also will calculate grade-point averages any time you're using letter grades. It will print out official-looking formatted transcripts as well.
We have been using this service through our umbrella school here in TN, but I will continue to use it on an individual basis, for $20/year, once we move to NC. It's very handy and labor-saving in all kinds of ways -- and it is nice to see that GPA computed at the bottom of the semester's grades.
