My first child is wrapping up her sophomore year of high school. Today she took the placement test (Reading, Writing, and Math) for the First Step Program at Central Arizona College. She tested out of Reading (No Reading Required!), she tested into English Composition III (college level!), and to our happy surprise, Intro. to Algebra or Business Math 101 (college level!).
We knew that she would kick the Reading (one passage was about Mary Cassatt and one was about an anciet Roman city - she describes the other passages as non-descript) and Writing...but WOW! Based on this she will take English Composition III this summer.
About the math...it has been her struggle - and her parents . We were expecting her to possibly place into a lower level math, which would have acted as a refresher course to prepare her for college. I can't describe the joy on her face when she realized that she tested out at a college level. I am so hoping this helps her confidence to grow and gives her added *oomph* to to continue her math studies. So...she will take an art appreciation course this summer instead of math. She is so happy!
When I dropped her off to take the test, I drove to do a quick errand and cried sad, bittersweet tears all the way to the store. "My baby...how can this be?" After I returned and heard the results, I cried happy and relieved tears. "Wow!...how can this be?"
Thank you for sharing this moment with us! And for sharing so much support and help over the years to help get us here.
group hug!
Love,

Thank you Laura, stef, Melanie, Willa, Cay, Maria, Mary, Kelly, Molly, Nancy, Ruth, and KC! We're enjoying this moment and are glad to have you party with us! It looks like Devin is going to take the English 101 only. She wants to give this class her best attention and she wants to do some other things this summer. Just as she was coming to this decision, but was still unsure, last night at Little League we recognized a woman from the college we had just met, cheering in the crowd. I re-introduced myself and it ends up she is the grandmother of a player that we know pretty well. She and her dd talked to me in a very relaxed fashion about the benefits of not taking too many credits too soon, how the summer program is more intensive, etc. How's that for timing?!
I'll keep you posted and ask for your prayers as we enter this new chapter...
Love,

Angie,
Kayleigh's ACT score was high enough for her to get credit for English 101 without having to take it. Then she found out the English she'll be taking this fall is all research and essay papers.
She told me yesterday, "Do you know how much work that's going to be?"
And she thought she was getting off easy.

I'm pretty confident that Devin would eventually comp out of Eng 101 too, but it looks like she wants to take it now for herself. And, you are right...what do you get for your excellent efforts...more work! So much for getting off easy .
Love,
