Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone here used this book or know much about it? Mrs. Schofield presented a seminar in my city last week, but I was unable to go (alas, the dilemma of having an almost high-schooler as the oldest and a 1yo as the youngest, lol). I've got another year to figure out how to track credits and prepare a transcript and wondered if this book is recommended. If not (or even if so), what other books on transcripts and courses/credits can you recommend?

Thanks!

I haven't read that one, but there's a book by Cafi Cohen And What About College?. It actually recommends starting to track things in 8th grade, since homeschooled kids are often ahead a grade level in at least one subject. We have quite a bit of time before we get to that point, but it was nice having the information in the back of my mind.

You'd have to read the book for full details and suggestions, but the basic thing is to have you or your child keep a notebook where every activity for the day is written down, the amount of time spent (rounded to the nearest quarter hour), and what traditional school subject to which it relates. This includes time spent reading any book, working on a project or hobby, exercise, specific assignments, and extra curricular activities. Then every week or month you tally up how much time was spent on each subject; I think 120 hours equals a traditional high school credit for that subject. It was a really good book; I may have to check out the one you mentioned, though, too.

Thank you, Barbara. I will check to see if my library has it or can order it. (Cheapie that I am, I don't want to buy it unless I know, without doubt, that I'll use it.)

If I understand your summation, though, we essentially need to journal every single we do? Oh, boy. I can't even get daily journaling down... this may take some Herculean effort!

You may find that you do not need to track hours for every subject. If you use a program for a foreign language, for instance, you can just award the credit when the program is completed.
I am working on tracking/recording credits for my ninth grader right now, and I am a little overwhelmed by it sometimes!

In Christ,

I just checked out from our library Cafi Cohen's And What About College?, I also checked out one of her other books Homeschooling The Teen Years since I am new to Homeschooling. I LOVE both books, I am big time cheapie, but will be buying both of her books.
Any other suggestions for books to help with college bound kids? My daughter is 13 and will be 8th grade as I start homeschooling her next year! I hate to go just off one authors account of getting into college...

Highschool of Your Dreams from CHC might be nice?

Honestly I wouldn't have considered it at all if I hadn't seen a friend's copy first.

I'm going to look at those other books too as I'll have an 8th grader next year and agree that one should plan a bit early "just in case".

I'm curious to know how you other ladies have kept records for college? I don't think the college will care about hours per subject? But I am interested in maintaining a portfolio of experiences and work just in case I need it to back up a high school transcript, kwim?

Ever interested to have my maternal worries soothed.
Because you know, if they graduate and don't succeed and blame their school - *gulp* that school is ME!

Deep breath here. No reason to freak out. Have several years yet. They are doing great so far and there's no reason to think that's going to change. Repeat mantra as neccessary to get through the day.

Our eldest is going to do a community college program via the internet next year as a way to ease into college. They require only a parent-issued transcript and a parent-issued diploma for homeschoolers. Once she's a student with the community college, she can transfer to a "traditional" college if she desire. (I hope she does!)

I just bought the "Homeschooling The Teen Years" at a second-hand shop last week. :) I don't have any advice... I'm in the same boat. My son will be 13 in June and we'll be tackling 8th grade. That's why I'd like to get a jump on the credits now - practice, practice, practice.

That's exactly it! I'm feeling lots of pressure to measure up.

I'll look into High School of Your Dreams. Thanks for the tip.
