Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

HI, I am a lurker who decided it is about time to start posting too! Anyway, to try to make my post short - I returned to my catholic faith 2 years ago. I used Seton 8th grade religion with my now 14 year old last year. I do love all the information in the Baltimore catechism - but he finds it very dull and I do not want to push him away from Catholicism because of a dry religion series.

So, Has anyone used the United States catholic catechism for adults with their teens? It seems a like it might be a bit more interesting and a better spring board into parent - son discussion. I would love to get your imput!

Dear Barb,
We have been very pleased with Fr. McBride's Teen Catechism.

We've also enjoyed Fr. McBride's Family Catechism and I see he has another one called Fr. McBride's College Catechism: Forging Faith on College Campuses which I have not read yet.

His writing is easy to understand and flows so smoothly it isn't a burden in the least. It's written in Q/A format so it's excellent for the parent and child to use as an oral lesson a day.

Fr. McBride's books are good.

I also suggest the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is a synopsis of the essential contents of the faith from the catechism and would be in my opinion a helpful resource for a teen using the CCC.

Thank you ladies for your quick reply! I just might go with Fr. Mcbride's Teen Catechism. It looks like it is better suited for a teen.

I see that the Catholic Company sells a Teaching Guide for this. Have either of you seen that?

Thanks for your help as I narrow down my DC's curriculum!

Have you looked at the Didache Series? I have one of the books, Understanding the Scriptures by Scott Hahn, and it's fabulous. Interesting, beautiful pictures, maps, charts. I haven't seen the other books in the series, but they've been recommended by Dr. Hahn and some priests in our diocese. They're appropriate for high school but also college, RCIA, and adult ed classes; they pretty much cover all the bases (basic doctrines, morality, Church history, and an overview of Scripture).

I have NOT used them with children yet (my oldest is ten!), but I can't wait.

Barb, I used the Teen Catechism and the teacher's guide. It's been a few years, so I don't remember many specifics - except that I did use the teacher's guide. . . often I'll buy a teacher's manual and it sits on the shelf.
