I am sitting before my computer this morning with a heavy heart. My oldest is on his way to a "shadow day" at Marmion Academy. He was accepted, with honors, for the 2007-2008 term.
We had been committed to homeschooling through high school, but then my dh began to feel our oldest was no longer accomplishing enough at home. We decided to go throught the application process to "explore our options" but without any more discussion Ben was enrolled. The logic was, see how well he did on the application, he needs a more challenging environment. I tried to show, see how well he did on the application, we must be doing something right at home.
Ben is excited about going, as he has a few good friends from Scouts that go there. I am trying to be encouraging about this new chapter, but must secretly admit that I am hoping he will hate it  (Not that I think he will)
It is a good Catholic boys school, mostly taught by Benedictines, very sound in doctrine and conservative in application. I am still praying about accepting this change, and my dh's will, but it is hard.
Thank you for letting me vent a bit here.

You sound just like me. I know what a heavy challenge this is to see your oldest leaving the nest. But you are still there for him in many fruitful, encouraging ways. Knowing you are at his back will make the experience immeasurably beneficial.
I will pray for your son's new adventure and for you.

LeeAnn, I was stunned when my son was accepted and decided to attend a very rigorous Marianist school. I, too, was hoping he'd hate it and come right home  . But he's thriving, he loves it, and is getting an excellent education. In this case, though, my dh, an alumnus of the school, was satisfied with the home education; it was truly my son's decision. His growth in discipline and spirit have been pronounced. When I see my ds get up at dawn, get himself ready, and head out the door in a jacket and tie  , I want to cry sometimes. But when he gets home, and tells us about his day, shows us his accomplishments, and reunites with his family, I know he made the right choice. Except when he argues with his siblings  .
FWIW, I bet it'll be fine.  150 years ago, boys were routinely heading off to college at 15. Consider this, as I do, a stepping stone to the college years.

Prayers, of course, but also a note to say I'm a bit jealous that you even have such an option around you. Our eldest went to PS for his Jr and Sr year, though I'd always planned on hsing all the way. But things got so ugly here it had to be done for the sake of the younger children. Had we had an option like the school your ds is going to, I suspect my eldest ds faith would be intact. Young men really do benefit from the example and instruction of holy men and regular contact with other boys/men of good faith. I see that these were things that were sorely missing around here. And I realize that that is NOT the case for many hs families. Many have great support around them for their boys.
I'm certainly not trying to minimize the real pain and agony this decision can bring about for you, and pray God gives you all the direction, peace and joy you need for this decision.
My dh is planning on having our 16yo ds now go to PS too next year. It is hard, I know.

Well he loved it. I am happy for him and hope this is everything he wants it to be. I am glad we have a school here that will provide him an excellent, Catholic education.
