We seem to revisit "tall tales" every year.
I would love to find some "new to us" picture books and compile a list to keep on hand.
Our favorites right now are the Steven Kellogg books, especially Paul Bunyan.
What are some you your favorite "tall tales"?

Oh! Most definitely John Henry by Julius Lester and Jerry Pinkney. And if you can get the audiobook version read by Samuel Jackson, even better! Such a wonderful book.

Joann, are you mostly looking for the traditional American "tall tale" fare - Bunyan, Crockett, Henry, Appleseed, Pecos Bill, etc...? or lesser known traditional/regional fare? or original newer stories?
Kellogg does seem to be the master of the folk/tall tale picture book. He is quite prolific.

And I also like the old Ezra Jack Keats' John Henry. It's obviously not new, but if you haven't seen that one, good one to add.
Here are a couple Casey Jones I like.

Some fun Davy Crockett:
Davy Crockett Saves the WOrld (Rosalynn Schanzer)
Davy Crockett Gets Hitched (Bobbi Miller)
This is more of a folk tale than tall tale, but hey, what is the actual distinction?
Daniel Boone's Great Escape (Michael Spradlin)
There are lots of great Johnny Appleseed books which have been compiled here - Your favorite Johnny Appleseed and Johnny Appleseed?
There have been several recent books that focus on original female tall tale heroines, so don't have a long historical trail as a tall tale.
Thunder Rose (Jerdine Nolen) was okay.
These Anne Issacs books are much better, fun and entertaining.

And a newer book that is literally a "tall tale" - has a historic basis.
The "Giant" of Seville: A "Tall" Tale Based on a True Story (Dan Anderson)
And here is a new one I haven't seen yet, but looks good and I just requested it. I'll let you know - Paul Bunyan's Sweetheart

Oh and I also meant to add that Pinkney has illustrated another tall tale book, written by San Souci - Cut from the Same Cloth: American Women of Myth, Legend, and Tall Tale. It's a compilation collection and much longer than a picture book.

I can't find the name of the book, but we loved the picture book that had some of the Rootabaga Tales by Carl Sandburg. Those are such funny tall tales. Can anyone remind me if the title?

Here is one we frankly just stumbled on at the library. It is such a winner! Especially since my best friend from college/dd's godmother is from Louisiana!

Just ran across a "new" old series of fun tall tales written in the 1960's by husband and wife team, Carl and Elizabeth Carmer. The Pecos Bill one was really enjoyable.
Now I've requested the others in the series:
Mike Fink and the Big Turkey Shoot
Captain Abner and Henry Q
Tony Beaver, Griddle Skater
And I'm looking for some of their other books as well. Looks like some good historical fiction titles.

In following the Carl and Elizabeth Carmer trail, I found another great old book.
America Sings - Stories and Songs of Our Country's Growing
It is a collection of American folktales and folk songs. Carl Carmer retells a folk story and links it to a folk song that relates in some way or is incorporated int eh story. The music and lyrics for the songs are at the end of each story. Lyrics may vary from traditional. Illustrations are by Elizabeth Carmer. It is really enjoyable and introduced me to various folk heroes and songs I was not familiar with. So I have been looking for links or downloads of the songs.
For example:
Some tales are ones he creates from historic stories like that of Philetus Bumpus, Erie Canal boat captain, ends with the song Low Bridge, Everybody Down
Others are often-told folk tales, like a Daniel Boone & bear tale followed by the song Cumberland Gap
I am really impressed with the Carmers work. There is a lot in this book. He is good storyteller.

We've always enjoyed the Steven Kellogg books and recently I purchased American Tall Tales by Mary Pope Osborne. We've really enjoyed the wood engravings by Michael Curdy, the book is full of them.

The Bunyans - Audrey Wood
Creates a wife and two children for Paul Bunyan and explains how those adventurous/mischievous children were responsible for many of the natural wonders of the United States (Niagara Falls, Old Faithful, Big Sur, Great Sand Dunes, etc.). It focuses pretty heavily on western locations which we all enjoyed as they are familiar to us.
