I am ready to row off into the Revolutionary War with my 7 and 9 year old. I have found a couple longer chapter books to read aloud, but I can only find a couple picture books to share with them.
Hopefully you wonderful ladies can point me to some intersting books!
Thanks so much for your help.

Dutton Children's Books published a gorgeously illustrated version of Paul Revere's Ride that our family has really enjoyed.
Peace,
Nancy

Joann - I am in the midst of the Revolutionary War with my 9 year olds and my 5 year old. I have a whole list of picture books I can send you if you need any more (they may be under history on my blog). We have really enjoyed listening to Johnny Tremain on cd - we listened over several days and it was hard to stop each day. (the dvd is not worth it though) Also the boys have enjoyed the Liberty's Kids DVDS and Schoolhouse Rock America. (funny thing - the guy who put in our new water heater was called Patrick Henry - my boys thought it was funny!)

We had fun with lots of these books about George Washington last Fall. There are some readers and movies in there too.

Here are some that we have read - I tried not to duplicate the ones on the Serendipty list or Suzanne's Washington list, but just one's that hadn't been mentioned.
Yankee Doodle America - a fun alphabet book
Sleds on Boston Common – Set in Boston during winter before the Revolutionary War. A fictional but entertaining account of young boys confronting the British soldiers about blocking their sled runs. Based on folklore of the Boston area.
These are two additional illustrated versions of the Longfellow poem:
Paul Revere's Midnight Ride - Engaging story of Paul Revere's ride. Gorgeous illustrations by Greg Harlin. Very vibrant with long narrow panoramas that run across both pages.
Paul Revere's Ride
Dangerous Crossing: The Revolutionary Voyage of John and John Quincy Adams
Samuel’s Choice
The Boston Tea Party
Let it Begin Here: Lexington & Concord
Some stories about girls and the ladies of the Revolutionary War:
Scarlet Stockings Spy (warning: sad, pre-read)
Sybil’s Night Ride
This Time, Tempe Wicke?
They Called Her Molly Pitcher
Katie’s Trunk
Phoebe the Spy
...and there is one other story we really enjoyed but I can't find it or remember the title. It's another spy/message story about a boy who's mother has him row into a cove at various times - British soldiers are there. He doesn't realize he is gathering information that is being sent on to Revolutionary soldiers. It's bugging me that I can't remember or find it - sound familiar to anyone???

Would love it if you posted it here, Marilyn - if you get a chance.
Oh, and I was going to add a couple more. They are really post Revolutionary War, but you might be interested.

I have made some changes - eg don't use the spines - and have added to my Inventors section (can post more later - doc appts all day)
My dh also took the children to the newly opened American History Museum in DC - really awesome.

From Mary's suggestions above, I have a few favorites that I feel compelled to report in about
**Duel is a GREAT book! This one has been going around the neighborhood. All the dads say there are lots of things in that book that they didn't know! It's very well done.
**Pete and I both loved, loved, loved Let it Begin Here!!!!! and They Called Her Molly Pitcher!!!!
**Samuel's Choice is marvelous! I can't stop thinking about this story.
**The Escape of Oney Judge has lots of Rabbit Trail potential in the future!!!

Another recent find for me is Colonial Voices: Hear Them Speak. It's pre-revolution, but focused on the time immediately preceeding. Each page highlights a person with a specific colonial era occupation. That person shares a little about what they do and how they are a part of the unfolding events and politics of the revolution. End notes give more detail about each occupation of that time. It's really well done and we enjoyed it a lot.

Gingerbread for Liberty!: How a German Baker Helped Win the American Revolution by Mara Rockliff
One of those little known stories from history - this one from the American Revolution. Tells the story of Christopher Ludwick, a German immigrant who baked for the Continental Army and also was responsible for some Hessian soldiers joining the colonist's side. Following the war he was known for his charity and efforts to aid the poor, especially children.
This is a fun book and the illustrations which look like gingerbread figures are quite unique. Includes a recipe for gingerbread.
