Thank you for sharing the lesson plans, Michaela! How is it possible that two years have passed already.
If you or anyone else is interested in supplementing those plans, here is a link to a project we completed when our beloved Papa passed away: Pope John Paul II Memorial Notebooks.

Here is a unit study on Pope JPII (pdf file) I wrote with Maureen Wittmann and Nancy Brown two years ago for Heart and Mind.
It's complete with timeline, recipes, links, and lots more.
Hope you find it helpful.

Thanks for the reminder folks -- we LOVE JP2 and I'm going to do a big unit this year (when he died I was in the midst of a miscarriage -- talk about grief and then the next year, we were in the midst of trying to move, sell, pack........ So 2007 is the YEAR of JP2!
THANKS for all these great unit studies ...

While the boards were on Lenten break I compiled some Lent with the Holy Father, including John Paul II things. I love that unit that Cay did. There are some threads from that time when he died and we got the new pope. I have a box of stuff to make into a JPII album, that I compiled during that time. I need Molly and Chari to put it together for me.

Did you catch this story that JPII made clandestine ski trips? I thought it was so neat!
Some ideas to add to this rabbit trail, Poland.
For your notebooks, here is some Polish Scrapbooking supplies, including paper with maps of Poland.
St. Faustina
I do remember a thread on celebrating his election on October 16, and that his nameday was November 4, the feast of St. Charles Borromeo. Those posts had food discussions...but I couldn't find them.

Jenn, this is, indeed, very neat! I ahve always said to my boys how incredibly blessed we were to have John Paul II for our pope. Reading little snippets like this make me love and miss him more. I don't know that I am able to get through any of his books without .
We have been doing more reading on him, as we studied Poland, but I was saving the involved study of him for this anniversary, and now I have you all to thank for these terrific resources!
God Bless,

Thank you, thank you! To all of you!
We are taking a break from WWII this month (Other than to discuss what Karol Wotyla was doing at that time) and are putting together a scrapbook of our beloved Papa.
Thanks for the riches here!

If you can get a hold of this 1982 comic book from Marvel - Life of John Paul II it covers a lot of the WWII time. My kids really enjoyed it.

Can we talk videos about JPII? Another aspect that made this pope so unique was the media coverage of his papacy. Besides what we have in books and his writings, he had numerous audiences, traveling, meetings and so much is captured on film, both still and video. We can see his love, his laughter, his reprimands, his pain...he didn't hide it from us.
The Vatican Television Center Presents - JOHN PAUL II The Pope Who Made History is the series dh and I are watching right now. It's great footage, a bit disjointed and uneven in coverage. We're only on DVD 3, so I can't review the whole thing. There was one slip where he was visiting one South American country and they quoted a man pleading the Pope to keep ebracing liberation theology...but the film makers didn't make note that JPII spoke against this erroneous teaching. Even with that we are still enjoying the series.
Our next one purchase will be A Witness to Hope. We just love Wiegel's book, and have seen parts of this on EWTN and love it.
Ignatius Press sells the movie starring Jon Voigt which we also enjoyed.
Our favorite DVD so far John Paul II and University Students: 25 years of Meetings. You can see and feel the love that JPII has for the young people, and there are some wonderful scenes where JPII is just smiling and laughing, just being relaxed and enjoying himself and loving life.
Do you have any favorites of John Paul II?

Jenn,
We LOVE the Jon Voight video, Pope John Paul II. It's so good -- we borrowed it from the library and have watched it twice! The kids love it!
The Witness to Hope is also exceptional.
Now, right after the Pope died, there were lots of network-versions of his life and now I can't remember which one was GREAT and which one was really BAD! I'm thinking the A&E Biography was the really bad one -- gave a very secular view of him and the papacy and the Vatican politics. Whereas, the other network versions (including the NBC and even BBC's) were SO much better!
We also really enjoyed The Jeweller's Shop which is a great rendition of the play he wrote. It gives an interesting, almost autobiographical view of the story.
